I understand you guys may get a lot of these threads, I apologize about making another one of these threads but I see it fit after using the search button and not finding exactly what I wanted.

I am looking for the right knife, I don't know a lot of info about knives, but I sure do use them a lot.

I use a knife in all types of situations, I just actually broke my CRKT Point Guard a little over 2 years. At work I open a lot of boxes up, and cut rope etc... and I really need a folding knife since I can't carry a fixed blade knife around on me in a working enviroment. Also, during the summer I am a trek/trail guide and I beat the hell out of my knife during this period every year, I do simple things with it like cutting rope all the way to using it as "hatchet" by hitting the top of the blade with a stick to cut things etc... And I also use it as an improvised screwdriver sometimes and whatever else. I will be beating the hell out of my next knife, just like my previous one.

As I mentioned before, I need it to be a folder since I have to carry it around etc...

I have been looking at some Emerson knives lately and they seem pretty decent but I really don't know.

Also, it would be cool if it was a "tactical" knife since I work for a company that deals with tactical equipment and many people at work have tactical knives and we like to show off a bit. But however, I prefer functionalty and durability before it being "cool" but the knife being tactical is a bonus.

FYI the CRKT Point Guard broke because the actual piece that holds the knife in place when it is folded up ripped through the grip. For a cheap knife it served me very well for 2 years.

My price range is no more then $200

Probably not what you're looking for, but since you may want to use it as a screwdriver, may I suggest a Swiss Army Knife or a Multi-Tool? You could have a knife, screwdriver, small saw, etc. all together. Also, CRKT makes a folder with a removable bit screwdriver built in Link

I'd love to help you out seeing how I'm just about to finish this process and have some ideas fresh in my memory. Just a few question are you right handed, and do have a handle preference or blade length range?

EDIT: When you say it has to be a folder so I can carry it around, I am assuming you want it to have a pocket clip, is this true?

I hate swiss army knifes, trust me I only like to carry a single blade folder. I meant the knife has to be tough pretty much when I said the screw-driver part.

I am right handed, and my blade length preferably is anywere between 3.5 inches to 5.5 inches most likelly, but basically around 4 inches. Remember I need to be able to carry this knife in my pocket all the time, especially during the summer and I don't need this huge 8 inch blade knife in my pocket when im climbing or repelling.

for a strong tank of a knife that is reasonably priced Id have to suggest the manix. Itll do all that you want and more and it doesnt look half bad either. you can get one for about 100 bucks. Awsome knife, you wont regret it =)

Buck's

Tarani
This knife probably fits your criteria the best. I'd say get this and a prybaby.

Spyderco's

Military
Manix this get my second vote as it is a great knife
Endura Wave

Although some think these knives are ugly and may not exactly be tactial, they are good knives.

Which ever knife you choose get a Basic Prybaby it is the perfect tool for you.

I second the prybaby recommendation. I really need to get one myself.

For your primary blade I have a few recommendations, check them out and see what you think:

Buck/Strider 880SP- 4" ATS34 spearpoint blade, super thick, full Ti liners and G10 scales. If you want a really slick cutter like for dicing apples and things like that look elsewhere, the blade is too thick, but it is VERY strong, will withstand your punishment and cuts reasonably well. Can buy online a bit over $100.

Bradley Alias I- 3.6" S30V spearpoint blade, Ti handles. I have just seen one of these once, but was impressed. Runs just over $200 online.

The suggestions for Manix and Military above are good also. If you like the military, look for the CF handled one with BG42 blade. That one is a VERY nice knife all around.

Whatever these other guys say + an Atwood pry tool (Prybaby). All knife knuts should have one.

If your doing a lot of utility cutting you may want to specify features and let them take you to the knife you need.

I would think a flat ground blade would slice boxes and baton wood more easily than any thin hollow ground, as many here have said. So the Buck is out. The Spyderco Military or Manix would be better, as would Ontario's RAT folder, the Griptillian, or others designed for tough field use.

Tactical knives have lots of styling bells and whistles that actually impede heavy use, like swedge ground blades, or square edged handles. It's just best to avoid them, they're just dressed up for show, not function.

I think your best bet would be a partially serrated (since you do rope cutting) Spyderco Endura. Hell, you could buy a regular one AND a Waved one for under 200 bucks. Not to mention that VG10 is a spectacular steel.

Let me be the first to recommend that you augment with a prybaby. I use mine constantly (also have a mini SOPThing, and a half dozen other Atwood tools). It is probably the single greatest way to extend the life of your knives. I EDC a sebenza, and if it could talk, it would thank my prybaby for saving it from many unsuitable tasks!

I just ordered a Spyderco Manix, a prybaby and a emerson commander (got the emerson because I wanted to, I don't think it'll ever leave the house, just wanted a tactical knife I guess).
