I'm looking for some traditional knives for family members. Basically, a camp/boy scout knife for my little brother. A fruit testing knife for my father, plain edge. Last but not least a barlow for my little sister, to be exact, a Boker barlow with the rich bright burnt stag handles that caught her eye after I sold mine.

I was looking at Remington's version of campers knives for my little brother. I was a traveler as a kid, but my little brother is mister outdoors. He built a tree fort with just a Vic I bought for him. I've since gotten him a Buck chinese Cadet, given him all of my Chinese folders, a bali that is losing its edge for him by a maker (had the same thing done on an Mtech that my little bro disassembled and lost all the screws). I just bought him a Benchmade mini Grip 556, and I'm working on a Delica for him. He likes the tacticools, but when asked if he wanted the camp knife or the Delica, he said he wanted both, but would take the camp knife over the Delica. So, he likes his traditional designs  (I'm still getting him both). So, can you recommend a good camp knife for under 50 bucks.

For my father, he has always been a gentleman farmer, and spends a lot of time in his orchard and his garden. He frowns upon the tacticools, and prefers the traditional designs. A good Schrade stockman gets him through his days, and has for a long time (until it got stuck in a long gone washer). After seeing the AG Russel version, and looking at several old ones at a knife show, I would like to get him one. He really likes sampling the apples and pears in his orchard, right off the tree. I saw an old serrated Dole fruit testing knife.

Last, couple years ago I picked up a Boker barlow with really pretty burnt stag handles. Probably bone etc. I either sold it or traded it, and after I sold it, my little sister saw it and wanted it. Went back to the stand I got it from, and he didn't have any more. Last I heard they were sold out. If anyone has an idea on which model this is, it would be appreciated.

Silenthunter....you could get all three from AG Russell!

They have a couple nice scout knives, that fruit testing knife, and a german-made stag barlow.

Three pieces of quality cutlery from a fellow Blade Forums Member (AG, that is).

Those work great for the first two, except my little bro might lose the camp knife. My little sister liked the luster of the Boker moreso than the knife itself.

There are plenty of Boker barlows on the 'Bay. As to the fruit knife, you could get him the AGR one. I myself would pick a nice Laguiole. The long flat ground blade cuts fruits, bread, and cheese with panache. I don't know about the camp knife. Maybe you should consider getting him a fixed blade, perhaps a puukko?

Since he had such success with his earlier SAK, how 'bout the One Hand Trekker from Victorinox? I think that's my favorite SAK model at the moment.

If he's in the Boy Scouts, Case has a current BSA license for pocketknives. Victorinox also has several BSA models.

He's only 13, and I talked with my father about giving my little brother a fixed blade, I had a Tomahawk TOPS knockoff in mind, pretty well constructed for a United Cutlery knife. Might get him something smaller.

I'm not familiar with the TOPS Tomahawk; I wouldn't give a weapon-ish or military-looking knife to a child as a gift. I wouldn't be opposed to my kid buying one himself, like a Small Ka-Bar or Buck Nighthawk, but it's not the sort of thing I'd choose for a gift.

Instead, I'd look at the Mora knives from Frosts/Erikkson/MOS at ragweed Forge. Very inexpensive, available in a variety of sizes, carbon or stainless, and some models with guards. I put away a small guarded model for my boy when he's older. And he can finish the bare wood handle and uncoated leather sheath himself as a project, making the knife uniquely his.

I also like the smaller Buck models, Pathfinder and Woodsman.

Happy Shopping,
-Bob

instead of a mora try a pukko. Much prettier for a gift knife, and still useful.

Well I am only one year older than him and having a passion for the outdoors as well this is my recommendation. I don't really know any good scout knives:o , so since he does not own a fixed blade I would get him a Mora or Marble's woodcraft blade, they would make companions on his woods bumming trips.

To me there is no better scout knife than a Vicrorinox,A trekker or similar would be great.Or if your looking for a smaller knife,a fieldmaster or farmer would be my choice.

I you decide on a fixed blade, the moras are wonderful bargains, and imo are very well suited to woods tasks. My favorite mora is the swedish army knife,I don't know the model number right of but that design is available at ragweed forge in carbon and triflex steel as well.It feels much more solid to me than a clipper, and the sheath though plain is secure. And you could easily pick up a vic and a mora for $50

My little brother is 13 as well, and like you I've bought him alot of knives,he's like me he's been using knives since he could talk LOL

I've got a nice plain edged Dole fruit testing knife (Colonial):

There are some similar ones on the bay right now, but with other company names on it, and also some from other makers (Case, Queen, ...) which don't look bad at all.

.

The brand is Tomahawk, a cheaper :D division of United Cutlery. Just resembles a TOPS design. As for the fixed blade, I am seriously debating a Mora.

For camp knife, I don't think any knife beats the vic solider in value. It's something that you can definitely afford to lose.
In addition, Vic and Wenger also has some fruit samplers knives for a good value/deal.
I personally wouldn't get kids carbon steel blade. Just because carbon blade require more maintance. With the Vics on the other hand, you could just soap and hot water.
