Looking for thin steel and hitting a roadblock.

I've made some small knives in the past, and have the itch for another, but I've hit a problem.

I have some 1/8" 1095 sitting around, but this time I'd like to knock out something around 1/16- a small hunter or something similar.

Jantz has it, but they ship UPS. UPS has essentially declared my apartment complex persona non grata- getting something delivered takes about twice as long, as they just throw up the "Attempted to Deliver" notice without knocking. Considering I'm usually in clinic and can't be home, UPS is out.

Anybody know a smaller seller who would be willing to ship USPS or FedEx? Not looking for much, just a linear foot or so, but UPS charges plus difficult delivery have me wary.

I checked your profile to see if maybe your location was a problem

"Home of the WNIT Champions"
I've no idea what the hell that means.
Am I supposed to know what that means?

Maybe if you put in the Country, State, city - that sort of thing we could help you more.

If you're in USA, try Aldo.

The 15N20 is pretty thin

If you're close to a machine tools supplier, you can get O1 in thin sizes worldwide, although the metric, European and Japanese designations are different & I'm not up on that terminology.

Ah, sorry, that was a shout-out to my alma mater, the University of Toledo, Toledo Ohio USA. Their women's basketball team won the National Invitational Tournament.

Can't say I've tried Aldo or 15N20. What's 15N20? I've worked with 1095, 1084 and what was believed to be L6.

Look in the yellow pages for local supply firms like MSC, Grainger, Fastenal and so forth. They will be able to get you O1, D2 A2 and possibly other steels in just about any size you want.
Or, have it shipped to your workplace, so there will surely be someone there to sign for it.

Most of the damascus you see is 1084 and 15N20
It's the shiny one of the two, basically the same as 1080ish, but with a bit of nickel in it that resists the etching more.

It's in the big lumber sawmill bandsaw blades
It's because of this use, you can get it thin.
It's either from cut up used blades, or stock that is sold for making them.

So far no luck with MSC, Grainger, Fastenal at least via their websites. Now to do some more looking.

If only I knew what a standard Milwaukee sawblade was with certainty- got more than a few old ones about.

I don't know if it would be long enough, but I've got a leftover piece of 1095 that is 9 x 2 x 1/16. If you want it, PM me your address, and it's yours.

I have 1/16 band saw blade, its approximately 1 1/2" wide.. I have yet to make a blade from it but I'm almost positive its gonna be some good stuff.. I'll send you a piece if you'd like... I have yet to anneal it but will be doing it sometime next week..

I believe I've had Jantz ship to my PO Box via USPS, but amn't certain.
In fact I had some of their 1/16" 1095. Not very flat, but then anything that thin bends easy anyway.

I've had a small problem with jantz, they kept some of my money instead of crediting my card when they were out of stock on a product, I still have the credit but try not to shop there because they charge me sales tax...

never knew they had some thin stuff though, thanks guys..

More than long enough- I was thinking of a Little Finn or something similar.

PM is on the way, and I can swing shipping.

Thanks for the offer. :) No need to take the trouble on my account, though- annealing takes a long time, at least in my book.

Now that just goes to show you that you can't beat the folks on this forum.

Great bunch of guys.......... Robert
