It is a type of knuckle gun. many were handmade in Europe, particularly in Belgium and France. This type was worn like a ring. the section under the cylinder folds down to be gripped under a finger and it is fired with the thumb. Cylinder is then manually rotated for each shot. The palm squeezer was another popular version of this type of easily concealed handgun

If you come across one of those palm squeezers do not dry fire it! Dry firing even once will break the firing pin.
 
How does it damage the pin while dry firing? I've heard its ok to dry-fire on rimfire rifles, but not centerfire or shotguns. Why is there a difference and what causes the damage.
 
It's the opposite, you can dry fire a center fire but not a rimfire. The reason is the rimfire firing pin will be striking steel and possibly damaging both the pin and the chamber wereas the center fire the pin only hits air. It isn't good for most center fires and I advocate against excessive dry firing with snap caps in any case.
