I'm looking to buy some good steel for making tomahawks. I started off using mild steel with 01 bits but want to make some from solid stock. Where can I find a good steel and what size stock do you recommend.
Thanks in advance for any help. MM

I mostly use ballpeens to make tomahawks, but if your so inclined I would use square stock either 3/4" or 1" and probably use 1045. Speedy metal sells 3/4 1045 for $6 a foot and 1" for $8.00 a foot.
As I said I have never made one from scratch but if I wanted to that is the route I would go.

Kelly Cupples used to have 1086 in 1" square stock, and it makes great hawks. You might check with him.

If you have any big truck repair places near you then the big u bolts that hold the frame and axles together are 4140. I have some that is 1 inch around.
