Looking for training in Maryland

The subject pretty much sums it up. I first got info about FMA a few months back and have been planning to look up where to get some training after I decided which college to attend. Well now that I know that I'm staying in Maryland, I'm interested in finding out where I can get some FMA training, preferbly close to Baltimore. Knife work is what I'm really looking for, though stick work is obviously something I want to pick up. Just don't want to end up at a school that doesn't do much with blades.

How close to Baltimore? I have a friend in Columbia that teaches Kali Illustrisimo and that plans to set up a local branch of the Bakbakan International.

Doesn't have to be too close to Baltimore. I don't mind driving a bit (though I'd like to keep it fairly reasonable considering how driving back I could be really sore and tired). If classes are held on weekends, in the Montgomery County area is fine too since I do anticipate visiting home during the weekends. I know virtually nothing about Maryland's geography outside of Potomac and the parts of Rockville, Bethesda, and Gaithesburg that I often am in though so I have no idea where Columbia is.

Simon,

As Keith suggested, you should get in contact with Guro John Jacobo (Bakbakan Kali Illustrisimo). You may also want to check out Guro Allen Sacchetti. He teaches Pekiti-tirsia and another FMA style called Agas-Kilat. He is just north of Baltimore in Elkton. His web site is:

FYI, I've never trained with him, but I have corresponded with him via email and he seems to be really into the blade work (no surprise considering that he is a guro in Pekit) so it may be worth your time to go check him out.

If you don't find what you want and don't mind driving a little, our club is in Frederick, MD (approximately 45 minutes west of Balitmore on I-70). We train in FMA (derived from Pekiti-tirsia) and in Indonesian Pentjak Silat. We also train in full-contact, minimal protection stick fighting.

If you're interested in training with us (on a regular or occasional basis), or want some other leads, you can contact me via this forum or my email:

Good luck in your search.

Respectfully,

Dave Fulton

Thanks for all the information. I'll be sure to look up some of the leads you've given me when i have the time . . . which probably won't be soon judging by the slew of exams I have to take throughout May . . .
