Looking for winter hat

I looked at one of these hats at an Orvis outlet store this weekend for $18. It is nylon/polyester with rabbit fur. It is made in china, enroute through winnipeg, canada. I had a similar synthetic one, that I liked, with a wool liner that was warm, because it covered the back of my neck.

I visited this canadian website http://www.outfitters.ca/display.asp?cat=9 that advertised similar hats made of coyote, beaver, otter for $200 and up. Wow! Are these hats proportionately priced as warm as the $18 rabbit hat? Any recommendations?

I have one made by Columbia, IIRC. Extremely high quality and very warm. I've heard good things about the mad bomb brand but haven't tried it.

I lived a bigger part of my life in Siberia, and I can tell that a hat from rabbit fur is warm enough. Other furs can look fancier and last longer, but rabbit is OK.

I have two that I can only use in near zero cold or less. The warmest is a surplus helmet liner for pilots, has a leather outer with about 1/2" of shearling wool lining. Looks REAL stupid, but keeps the noggin toasty.
The other one is a Filson tin cloth waterfowl hat. Kinda Floyd R. Turbo-ish, but again, very very warm with the added benefit of the ear flaps folding down to a cape that covers the neck and buckles under the chin. Check out www.filson.com The tin-cloth is durn near indestructable, the shelter cloth one is good too, a little more supple. These hats are lined with wool. Not high fashion for you metrosexual types, but us manly types don't care what we look like as long as we are warm!;):D

I Like the Mad Bomber brand. THey seem to hold up better than the off brands. Also make sure in the summer you store the hat in something critter proof, we lost a couple last year to mice and or moths, (both were present in the box) now we store them in tupperware.

That type of rabbit fur helmet is certainly warm (Scandinavian winters here are no joke:eek:)But I actually find the synthetic fur versions warmer and more durable and given the notorious cruelty practiced in the Chinese fur industry-skinning dogs alive-it might be a more humane act too:thumbup:

The flying helmet style is really insulating and snug, keeps out the bitter cold but makes you a bit deaf though:D
