My boss asked me for a recommendation for a wood carving set. Around $100. Anyone have anything they use?

It 100% depends on the kind of woodcarving that is desired. Buying a set usually means you’ll end up with tools you probably won’t reach for as often.

For general wood carving, you’ll usually want something like the Flexcut detail knife. It fills lots of roles. You can carve a bunch of things with just that knife. For sure I’d get one of them no matter what.

From there it really depends what they are doing. Spoons warrant perhaps a scorp, spoon knife or at the very least a palm gouge. Relief carving will require V tools as well as gouges… You may need a “stab knife” as well.

As a brand, flexcut is ubiquitous and generally very good, especially at the price point. If you want more of a handmade knife feel, I like Deepwoods Ventures, but it’s a little more costly.

Don’t forget that a leather strop with stropping compound is the most valuable tool in the carver’s arsenal. Flexcut gold compound is what I use on all my tools. Gouges and v tools will need special consideration for purpose built strops and sharpening accessories.

If they don’t know what they want to do, tell them to look up folks like Doug Linker on YouTube and see what projects they like. Match the tools to the project.

Maine Coast Craft School has some very nice wood carving tools, often in and out of stock, but very nice people to deal with and some very fine tools.
