I am a engineer in the construction industry and I put my knives through there paces on a daily basis (including breaking several spydies, bucks and gerbers). I currently carry a BM mini-AFCK or a spyderco delica about 75% of the time and a leatherman wave 100% of the time. I am thinking about investing in an Emerson (maybe for Christmas ;-) ), but I can't seem to decide which model I want. I am looking at something half-serrated, satin finish, black handle and w/ or w/o a wave feature. I have narrowed it down to a CQC7B, Max-1, blackbird, specwar or maybe a commander (though I am not a big fan of the recurve blade) and I was just wondering which one yall thought would serve me best for general use/EDC.

the 7B won't let you down. I carry a mini-cqc 7B everyday and have had 0 problems with it. All of your choices are fine, so I'm jsut throwing in my opinions.

I also have a commander and it too is a great knife.

Good luck!

SOCFK is the best production EKI imho, is a CQC7 blade on a spec war handle that is waved, extreme outfitters sells for about $150 when they are available, i think they have some in now IIRC, the knife is less than other EKI's because its targeted at the military, thus the low price. if i'm not packing my spec war custom CQC8 or my crawford perfigo i am packing my green G10/black blade SOCFK tanto.........

much neater than a '7 and kind of unusual/rarely seen to boot. many dont even know WTF "ya have a what?!?"

#2 would be a CQC8 they are fixing to come out w/a waved version, will be a while though.

#3 would be a P-Tac

I recently bought an SOCFK from Extreme Outfitters (www.tacticaledge.com) and they are $ 139.99 shipped. If you could only have one tanto bladed Emerson this would be it.

I do myself like the CQC-8 the best but they are more pricey at about $ 170.

If you can't aford these then watch for light used CQC-7B. Without the wave they can usually be had for under $ 100.

If your usual usage is breaking Spydercos and Bucks, it will definitely chip and break Emerson folders too. I would suggest a Buck Strider (in either spearpoint or tanto), or bite the bullet and spend the cash on a Strider folder. Emerson knife blades in 154 and the heat treat they get will simply not hold up anywhere as well as the Bos treated Buck Striders.

I dunno... I've seen EKIs hold up a lot better than Spydercos to heavier use, if only because of the thick edges and low saber grinds. They don't slice or cut as well, but that's the price you pay.

The Buck Striders are nifty but they REALLY have difficulty cutting due to the thick blades and low, deep hollows. Once the grind gets hung up in something dense, it's a serious pain getting it back out.

Strider folders are definitely something to consider. Although I wouldn't suggest using it as a prybar on a regular basis, they will hold their own and the warranty is as good as it gets.

imho ther buck/striders are just too darned big for pocket carry, and i carry lots of big knives (ie ralph 5.5" maxx, crawford perfigo, emerson CQC8, etc)

just too thick imho, not too heavy/big, just too thick.

Hello,

I carry a minni CQC-7B s and have absolutly no broblems with it at all.

The mini CQC7 and CQC7 , with and without the wave are pretty tuff . The mini is a nice pocket carry . I think i would pair it up with a Peter Atwood Prybaby for the dirty work.

I also had a hard time choosing when I first got my Emerson and ended up with the CQC7 with the wave, however the only thing I was dissapointed with was the Choil(index finger grip) since I have changed to the SOCFK available at Tacticaledge.com, the Emerson SOCFK combines the wave feature with the blade of the tanto CQC7 and the handle of the Specwar. all in all the best knife I have ever seen or used, check it out I guarantee you will not be dissapointed as its handle grip will be more than sufficient to put it to work in almost everything

peace
