I have recently been using an Canon Ti film SLR and love the quick focus and shoot and the feature to shoot multiple shots back to back.

I am looking to upgrade my digital camera and being that my kids are into various sports and the like need a digital camera that will focus fast and shoot quickly, not the typical lag that I have experience with digitals.

I am not looking to go the digital SLR route because my wife is not a big fan of lugging that size camera outfit. I would like to keep the purchase to $400 or below and am looking at the Canon A710 and may spend a few more bucks and go for the G7. All the manual mode and setting are not really needed, I just again want something that fires as quickly as possible when you hit the button.

Any suggestions on a camera that would meet or come close to those needs?

I've had the Sony H-1 which I think is great -stabilized 12X zoom ,lighter and smaller than the SLR types and you can run it as a point and shoot or do lots of other things .The newest versions coming out this month [H-7 and H-9 ]have a reduced shutter lag and some other features for fast shots.Very good value on these. Similar are Canon 3S and a few others though I don't know about their shutter lag. See www.dpreview.com for thorough reviews.

I bought a Sony Cybershot (DSC-W7) for my wife two Christmas seasons ago. She likes it very much especially because it focuses and shoots photos fast just like what you are looking for. I had an old Sony Cybershot and that was a pain to take photos because of the slow focus and shooting abilities. Canon does a few good point and shoot models and I suggested to my coworker Canon and she bought one recently. Have fun shopping around.

According to lists [ Google 'digital camera shutter lag] the Sony H-2 is one of the best ,that is has the shortest shutter lag. That can be improved by prefocusing -push button half way down which locks focus.

If anyone cares...

I ended up doing a head to head compare between the Canon S3 and the Sony H5 today... both camera's have pretty much the same features.

Tough call, ended up going with the Canon honestly due to a better price and the fact that I am not wild of being committed to the memory stick media Sony uses.

Both cameras meet the requirements I was looking for and far exceed my knowlede on manual photography.

Pics to follow.
