Hey guys,

Im going to get a new EDC knife, and i'd like some input.

here my specs:
-under $100 (or not much more)
-under 3 inch blade
-folding
-not an AO or gravity knife
-no super steel, something around the lines of 440c, or ats-34

Right now im looking at the benchmade mini grip with the modified sheeps foot blade.

I really think it's time for a good edc, i have some good larger knives for hiking, camping, and skinning but i'v been using a ccc buck 110 knock off with a 2.5 inch blade which ran me down $3 a year or so back- time for an upgrade i think!

thanks guys-

Check out Hideaway Knives (www.hideawayknife.com). They have HAKs just under or just over two inches for $69 in 440 stainless. Doing business with them is a hassle. They are honest, just not very efficient. But their knives are good.

+1 on the Delica 4 , very canny piece of engineering , cuts like a dream .

Something easy to get is the Spyderco Native for $40 at Wal-Mart.

That said, I am eagerly awaiting the big brown truck for my Delica Wave.

Edit: Whoops, I just realized you are in Canada. Does Canada have Wal-Mart? It's been about 8 years at least since I've been there.

I have both the Delica 4 and a thumb stud version of the Griptilian. I'll try to lay out the pros and cons.

Griptilian:
1. Superior fit and finish
2. Very high cutting efficiency
3. Thin and pointy tip
3. Very secure locking mechanism
4. Very fun and flickable.
5. Quick to open and close

Delica4:
1. Excellent ergonomics and grip security
2. Broad and robust tip
3. Thicker, more robust grind
4. Great new pocket clip design
5. Excellent VG-10 steel

I guess that I'd characterise the Mini-Grip was an extremely capable gents knife; perfect for the white collar worker. Loads of fun to play with and admire. The fit and finish is far superior to the Delica. The design is sensational, but the handle size is a little too small for the tougher jobs.

The Delica4 is a great blue-collar working man's knife. The tip is unlikely to snap off when called upon for "non-knife" duties. The ergonomics of the Delica4 are extraordinary. You get an amazing amount of grip security for such a small knife. The Spyderco hole makes the knife a cinch to open, but one-hand closing is a bit of an effort.

If you'll be ordering from the US, I'd go for the Delica. The Mini-Grip may open too smooth to make it past customs.

For just a little more you could be in the microtech mini socom range. Not sure where to find one though, or if you can, but this is a superb knife. For significantly less, the delica is a real good knife. I have a delica3 that has been waved, and it's a top notch knife. The 3 series has slightly pointier tips. Another suggestion would be to look at a sog mini vision. -Priced right, good design, good lock, ats-34.

Why not a Kershaw Junkyard Dawg or the Kershaw Storm? You can get both for under $100 and both have great Sandvik 13C26 steel. Neither are Assisted Openers and both are frame lock! Both are 4" closed and have three inch blades.

I second the Storm or Storm II.

I have bought many knives in different price ranges , but nothing makes a person feel better than buying something so well made at a great price.

I can't believe it sells for around $35.00....

Of course some don't like the style , but I think you should check it out.

We do, but the parking lots are sketchy, they are a polar bear hang-out :jerkit:

Don't forget that we have to wade through blizzards every time we leave home in -40 degree weather in July.

The unfortunate thing is our Wall marts do not carry spyderco (at least not where I live)

I am also a big fan of CRKT for the price

Everyone has an opinion, and I respect yours, but I disagree completely. I don't understand where the "hassle" is. You measure your fingers, decide on a style and who you want to grind it, and click add to basket.

Then you wait. Maybe a couple weeks, maybe a year or more. You're not charged until your knife ships, not even a deposit. The wait depends on when the collaberators can grind your knife. Plus it has to go out for heat treat, and to have sheaths made. The whole process of YOUR custom made knife can be tracked on her website so you can watch it's processs.

These are custom ground by some of the industries top knifemakers. They are not spit out of a machine. Frontsite (the owner of HAK) has a real job besides running a knife business. She has ALWAYS answered my emails. Maybe tomorrow, maybe next week. But always. She's awesome and has a lot of support and respect in the industry.

I am respectfully disagreeing with you only for the sake of others who may read this and get the wrong impression of HAK's customer service. Please don't take this as an attack, I just disagree.
Respectfully,

The AUS8 CRKT M16 is a good fun knife. 40ish

The Kershaw storm is a favorite of mine, for about 30ish. Good flipper, 13C26 works well for me....looks good...I really see them as the poor man's Mini Skirmish.

The mini grip is probably my favorite in your price range, all things considered. It's got an excellent, fast and fun lock, it's just the right size, decent, well treated steel, great f&f (for 50 bucks, anyway). FRN still sucks for that "feel," but it's tougher than it looks...

Might consider a Benchmade Sequel. I think it's 154CM, about 90ish, aluminum handle and g10 inserts. It's pretty much everything I like about the minigrip except with higher quality handle materials. You're not getting 90% more knife for the 90% greater price, but it's still a very nice little knife.
