im starting to look into a grinder, one that i can accually afford. the kmg is awesome but out of my price range at this point, lots of cool homemade ones out there, and i have heard of a couple guys that build and sell them. anybody have andy recommendations?

I've been using the GIB from polar bear forge and like it every bit as much, actually a little more then the KMG's I've used because of the 2 tooling arm slots. Ends up being much cheaper in the end as well. About 750 for a 1.5hp dc motor, dc drive, drive wheel, tracking wheel, and 2 2inch wheels. Along with the GIB of course.

My recommendation is for the Grizzly 2 X 72.
It's a great starter machine.

I just finished building one and have a pretty good up to date idea on how much it cost to buy or build one. How much do you want to spend? That really is the dividing line on what you get.

well i built a forge for half of what i could have bought what i wanted for. so i dont really have a set amount but deff under $1,000. i have access to build just about anything i what just dont know how much ill save by building rather than buying , ive never used a belt grinder so dont really know what it should and should not do and all that good stuff. my power is going to be 110 . and i like flat grinds but would also like to make some straight razors with will take hollow grind.

The Coote Grinder is a good deal and you just have to add a motor and pulley's and can be done for around $800.

The Beaumont set up with a Platen is $750 and just add motor and pulley's

Dont forget about shipping which can run about $100

The Grinder in the box is a great deal if you have the time to build it and the patience $260 + a few hundred for wheels and hardware. It is easiest to run direct drive with a VFD. Easily can reach $100 by the time you are done.

I made a GIB but the Coote and KMG were right in the running as well. When you are done it probably will only be a couple hundred dollars savings if you use the best wheels in your build.
