As the title above states I'm looking into getting a custom made folder for edc use, perferably with a TI frame lock for prices around 400-500$

Could someone possibly point me in the right direction of some custom knife makers that make a great folder, and is attainable from them directly and not only the secondary market?

I know the Les George vcep is one i've been hearing about a lot latley, but looks like you can only get them from owners that are selling them and not directly from the maker himself. I could be wrong tho!

You're input is greatly apreciated.

Ray Laconico will fit that bill in the Knifemakers forum and he will make you one the way you want it too, within his material inventory I believe . . .

My recommendation is to stick with experienced makers who have made a lot of knives by now. You don't want to pay too much for a custom knife to help the maker learn his craft on your knife. I know they all need mileage like we all do to get good at something and that notion may not seem fair to some but my experience is that you want a long term, experienced maker who has refined their craft and their knives already and not during the making of your knife ;) Otherwise you may regret not going with a high end production knife or a Mid-Tech.

I've been there . . .

Very good advice! I've been there as well and it's not fun especially if it is your first custom.

Great stuff, thanks very much for the replies! I have a few crk's and love them, but want to see how custom stuff compares to it.

I'm gonna second the vote for Ray laconico down in Visalia but also recommend Serge Panchenko in Sacramento. If you really want to go for the best, Jens Anso or Gustavo T. Cecchini (gtc knives) are up there with Ken Onion and the like, but may not be in your price range. Beware of fakes, email or call the makers about a transaction if you have doubts. There have been a few fake GTC's floating around the bay for a few years.
