Looking into umbrellas

Recently the weather here has gotten very wet, and an umbrella is a necessity. But as with most people the quality of an umbrella isn't something I've ever given much thought to; why would I when they're relatively cheap and easily available at most places?

Well that changed last week when the cheap umbrella I picked up to replace the previous one that met an untimely fate from a rogue tree branch, and I learned the hard way not all umbrellas are created equal, when I discovered the canopy size of the replacement was a smaller than I was expecting during a recent downpour.

That's when I started looking elsewhere, and I was surprised at the sheer variety of styles, designs, qualities, and canopy sizes.

What does everyone here look for when selecting their umbrella? Do you prefer the stick type or the collapsible travel umbrella? Are you fine with a small canopy or do you like something bigger, all the way up to a golf course umbrella? Do you prefer a single canopy with a lot of ribs for strength against high winds, or are you fine with the standard 8 ribs and a double canopy with wind vents? Or do you just prefer to go with a cheap $5 umbrella that's easily replaced in the event it gets lost or damaged?

I buy 62" or 68" golf umbrellas from big box retailers: Costco, Walmart, Home Depot, Dick's, etc. They run $20 to $40. I buy two and keep one in the car. Umbrellas that large have to be sturdy and they should last a long time.

When I lived in Manhattan 35 years ago, there were Midtown street vendors selling umbrellas rain or shine. The ones with straight wooden handles and shoulder straps were usable. When it rained, there were always vendors selling golf umbrellas outside Grand Central Station. They were $20 big box umbrellas for a few dollars more or less, depending on how sharp you were.

I’ve been using golf umbrellas for 35yrs. I have a Titleist at the moment. Titleist always has good equipment.

Yes ! Provides extra coverage for packages , the wife , dog(s) etc . Usually even the cheap ones are fairly sturdy and simple . Only downside , not compact .

Isn't that the truth.

Making matters worse is the presented measurement is always across the curve, not straight across, so it's very misleading. My current umbrella is 45" across from spoke to spoke, and I'm happy for that instead of the 37" I did have.

I've used inexpensive folding golf umbrellas also (from local Wmart, grocery stores, etc.) for over 20 years. If I'm doing any walking in the rain for more than a few seconds, the smaller umbrellas leave my pants soaking wet.

Of course, with such a large overhang, I have to be extra careful walking around others. I usually just hold my umbrella higher than theirs, or over their heads if they have none when I pass people. You also have to know how to lean the umbrella into the wind so it doesn't go inside out (this also helps keep you dry). I am 6'.

IMO, a nice rain jacket with hood works about as well as a small umbrella. So if you're going to carry an umbrella around, you might as well get a big one.

Mostly $15-30 collapsable ones. Have a small one in the door pocket or glove box of every vehicle, and the wife keeps a really small one in her purse for work. I will pay a little bit of a premium for a nicer Totes (or similar) at least, so they last longer.

I'd love a nice, big, quality golf umbrella, but I just have no use for one. If I'm gonna be in the rain long enough to worry about it, I've usually got my rain gear with me.

I generally use the large golf umbrellas from Walmart or similar. I keep one in my pickup, one in work vehicle, one in garage, and another just in case for my wife inside the house. The one in the garage gets used the most.

I just picked up a Totes brand umbrella. I like the wide closing strap, but it's going to take time to evaluate the overall package.

Hey, if you can make it work, more power to you.

Not sure if you have one where you live, but I bought 2 Totes golf sized ones on a buy one get one deal some years back. They have both been stellar and have been mistreated. Both still work great even though my wife has tried her best to tear them up.

There's one in each car and they have saved us several times from getting soaked.

Regards.

Is that one of their collapsible, auto open/close models, which brags about a 55" canopy but is in reality only about 48" across?
