As the title states i am looking to buy a new custom knife, and i was looking to get some recommendations. it can fixed or folding (please no slippies, just not really my style). For a folder I would prefer it to be a framelock, but if it was a linerlock or lockback I would still consider it. My price range is pretty much anything below $450, and my main use will be EDC.

any and all help greatly appreciated,

Noah

I'd recommend you carry the Sanrenmu 710 for one year at a cost of $10.00, and put the other $440 back in your pants.
This will give you a better idea of what size and type of knife to select next, then cost will have meaning.

Length Overall: 6.6 inches
Fold Length: 3.7 inches
Weight: 3.6 oz

While I do like and often EDC the SRM710, if you're looking to spend $450 for a knife, get Andrew Demko to make a custom version of the American Lawman....it's pretty much my grail folder.

There are a ton of options that meet the general criteria you mentioned. Would you mind telling us a bit more about your preferences so we can help narrow it down a bit? :)

For example, what are your preferences about the following?

size - blade length, weight, slim vs. thick, etc.
opening system [for folders] - thumb stud, spydie-style hole, flipper, assisted, etc.
blade material/style
scale material

Examples of production folders you like (or particular features you've liked) would be useful as well.

A lot of "yesterday's" knives that were in the $400 to $500 range seem to now be in the $500 to $600 range. Some dedicated searching will probably uncover some nice customs in the under $425 range.

Have you considered a neck knife from Murray Carter? Just got mine, was surprised about the small size at first but now I love it. Had to get used to the "knife around my neck" which might be a bit combersome. You probably could get an extra belt kydex sheath. Also, Murray has 40% off!! right now if ordered until Sunday! I think that's agreat deal! Every knife is handmade by him with a high carbon steel core and stainless outside!

My preferred size for a folder would be around a 3.5- 4 in blade, not that thick but not really thin, weight is not a huge issue for me. for a fixed blade my preferred size would be 4.5- 5 in blade, kind of thick, and weight is not a big issue. As an opening system i would like a thumb stud or flipper, (IKBS is a HUGE plus, but i dont know if i can get that in my price range). for the blade i love 154-CM and S30V, as well as its companions like S35VN, and S90V. I also like ATS-34. for the style of the blade i like a lot of different styles, so i'd be pretty open to anything. for scale materials either G10, micarta, dark woods, carbon fiber, titanium, damascus, and others in that realm.

Great, thanks for the detailed response. For folders, one possibility would be Tim Galyean's Pro Series knives (which he calls mid-tech or semi-custom because some of the work is CNCed rather than done by hand). The large variants of the Pro Series Lahar, Turbulence, and JYD all have blades in the 3.5-4" range made from CPM-154 (the Crucible Particle Metallurgy version of 154-CM), IKBS flippers, and titanium frame locks. And all are right around $450 (some a little more, some a little less). True North Knives and Knife Art (google them) both have some Pro Series knives in stock and galleries with plenty of high-quality photos if you want to look into them more.

Another maker to consider would be Will Zermeno, who has a hosted knifemaker's forum here on BF. He also makes titanium framelock flippers using CPM-154. Unlike the Pro Series, his knives don't have IKBS, but they also cost significantly less. In fact, you could probably get a flipper from him and have enough left over to get a nice EDC fixed blade while staying within your $450 budget. (Check out his order list thread for his current options and prices.)

Ordered my Murray Carter the minute the sale opened up : ) I'd recommend that or a Ray Lacinoco folder. Got one recently and absolutely love it

Thanks to everyone for the help. I decided to go with a Will Zermeno Azrael with the contoured G10 handle.

Thanks,
Noah
