Those are just a few. I didn't list any real 'cheapies'
as the two you listed are not in the $9.95 catagory. :)
Just do a side by side comparison of the styles you like
and then decide. Look for comfort, handle material, blade steel,
price, durability etc..

Good luck,

mike

First off, I hate gut hooks on knives. All I can seem to get them to do is snag on things that they shouldn't. In other words, they are just in the way. I've gutted near 100 deer and never needed a gut hook, but a budy handed me a knife with a gut hook on it when we were elk hunting a couple of years back. I almost left it in Colorado, as a favor to him. However, I did recently purchase a gut hook. Well, it is marketed as a rescue hook, by benchmade, and is designed to cut seatbelts. I thought it would be nice to try something new, and the price was right. They have several different models, but this is the one that I bought rescue hook. I cannot report on how well it does its job, but hope to after this coming deer season. It is well made and sharp out of the box. They recommend sending it back for sharpening, or stropping it on a loaded cotton rope. Check out this site 7hook for video cutting demos with the rescue hook. Has me sold that it will zip through a deer. Another good suggestion is the wyoming knife as mentioned above.

Some people like them, others don't see any need for them. The ones I've tried haven't worked very well - they tend to load up with fur. A decent drop-point is much more useful for opening game IMHO.

My experience as well... :)

The first one I used was the Buck Crosslock and it clogged. The problem was I had never seen one used and I cut in the wrong direction. When I cut in the same direction as the hair lays, it became a time saver. I've found it depends on the condition of the game. One that has just eaten and watered has a tight belly that is easily punctured. A hook or a knob end is very useful on those. Being somewhat careful on a mulie I still punctured the stomach and it sprayed me like a garden hose. Yuk:eek:! I always have a hook or knob blade now. For me, it makes the job quicker. Regards, ss.

thanks im taking all ideas into consideration...if it helps i would be using it for whitetail(the great pennsylvania whitetail). and about the leatherman...i actually was thinking about the multitools that have a gut hook

You really should look at and handle these "pivoting" gut hooks before you buy, (Steen and Hunter Revolver).

I think if you do, it will be easy for you to decide.

I use the Gerber gut hook. Not one on a knife but the Gerber Wyoming knife knock off. It works great. Then I use the Sagen saw for the pelvis and brisket. When its dull just put in another dry wall blade.
