Looking to buy a Leek but which one?

Hello,
I want to try out one of the Leeks as they look perfect for me. I have bought at least a dozen Kershaws recently but no leeks.

I do not want the 440a steel version and I am not interested in the steel handled one. I want decent steel and G-10 or some other grippy material for the handle.

What I am thinking about is the G-10 S-30v version in part serrated. Is there any reason I should look into another version or is this a good all around knife?

Also, where can I find a good deal on one?

The only thing about the G-10 versions that might be a drawback for some is that they are liner locks instead of framelocks like the aluminum or titanium handled Leeks. I have a 440A combo edge Leek with the silver aluminum handles and it's great. I do wish that I got a plain edge instead though as the serrations take up too much of the blade. Kershaw has changed the style of serrations though since I purchased mine.

It's a great knife and a great Leek to start off with. The G-10 scales have a real good grip to them even in wet conditions. The S30V blade takes and holds a great edge. I know you said you didn't want a steel handled one, but you might want to take a look at the new Random Leek as well. It also comes with the S30V blade steel and is partially serrated. Either way you'll end up with a great Leek. As far as finding a good deal on one, Google is your best friend.

I just recently bought my first Leek. I went with the Random but kind of wish I had gone with the G10. I am not nuts about the coating they used on the handle and blade, but the shape is unique and it kinda sucked me in. Overall I guess you can't really go wrong but I think you might be on to something with the G10.

According to the Kershaw website, the S30VG10 Leek weighs quite a bit less than the standard version.

I had one of the standard versions a few years ago and found it was just a little too slippery.

Recently bought one of the S30VG10 ones and I think it's terrific.

Another thing is that AFAIK, there are 3 different G10 versions.
One uses the standard 13C27, which has replaced 440A.
Another one has "polished" G10 scales; don't know what steel is in that one.
Then there's the S30V with standard G10, very grippy.

Though it's a linerlock, it's beautifully made. And the liner is thick.
In fact, the only change I would make to this knife would be to make it just a tad slimmer. But that's a minor issue; as I said I really love the knife.

Great action, interesting stone-wash finish on the blade, very substantial but light in weight, excellent fit and finish. A winner all the way IMO.

I think a great leek to start with would be the Random Leek for several Reasons:

1. S30V steel - premium Steel for a very good online price
2. Frame Lock
3. Reverse Tanto blade is stronger than the regular Leek tip

Just my opinion though. Here are some pics to Leek at:

I recently bought the plain Leek (stainless handles, plain blade). It looks good, feels good, it's quick, and I actually like the heft of it. I haven't tried it yet while super sweaty but I could see how it could be slippery. I'll just add grip tape (aka skate tape) in small areas if I find that it ever slips on me. I like you'll be happy with any Leek, but I'd lean towards a frame lock model. Just remember, as long as you find one that was made in July 07 or newer it will have the new steel.

save yourself the trouble and be like Jeremy, just get them all!

I am trying to avoid having to do that. I may end up with several anyway but I wanted to start with a good one. After seeing the pics, I wouldn't mind one of the rainbow ones. They are pretty. Also the Random Leek is something to look at.

The Random Leek is a great profile. Definitely a great choice for the reasons Jeremy mentioned.

You can always try the Random Leek out and then do what I did...

One more reason to buy one of each. They're a lot of fun mixing and matching blades and scales to come up with the " perfect " Leek..... just for you. Up until I got my TiZDP Leek, I had been EDCing a Leek with the G-10 scales and the old plain edge CKT Random blade.

i chose the regular silver one over the g10 one because i too prefer the frame lock over the liner lock.
