Looking to buy another watch

I have a question about watches for everyone. How much does everyone buy for the name of a watch. I have always really wanted one of the Tutima watches, although everytime I bring it up to my parents ( both Rolex owners) they say "What the hell is Tutima" and "Never heard of it". So I really am not sure if I should buy for more of name recognition or quality? What are your thoughts?

Thanks

Buy quality.....Buy Omega. :D

Tutima seems to have a very good reputation too. Fortis is another you may want to consider.

Fortis, I have a friend with one and he hates it.

Look at it this way, buy it once, buy the best, never have to buy one again-Rolex.

Omega sells more watches each year than Rolex but they don't hold their value.
Check out Oris, or IWC

What model is it? What doesn't he like about it? I am considering buying a Fortis MarineMaster, and this is the first negative comment I have heard.

Striper28, you're all over the ballpark with your post. Fortis is a respected and high-quality manufacturer of tool-style watches. They bring an excellent product to the market. Your friend may own one that needs simple servicing to get it back to normal. You don't even explain why he hates it. My family has purchased various Fortis models on my recommendation and they love them due to their reliability and superior clarity and legibility.

You go on to illustrate your relative inexperience with the "buy once, buy the best" comment about Rolex watches. There are many other companies who build a far superior product but don't have the huge marketing department of that famous brand. Rolex is a decent watch that appeals primarily to people who love name recognition.

Omega builds a solid, no-nonsense product. Their assorted Speedmaster and Seamaster models have been in and out of my collection for years. I currently have a stainless steel on stainless steel Seamaster that gets very regular use.

Oris and IWC are at opposite ends of the pricepoint spectrum. Oris has some very nice models for the money. I suggested an Oris to a coworker and she absolutely loves her purchase. She went with an automatic that is in a tonneau-shaped case that is very attractive. The basic IWC models start around $2400.00 and can go above a quarter-million for an IWC Grande Complication. One of my favorite watches is my IWC Portugieser 3714 in stainless steel.

Tutima is a manufacturer of German origin who supplies watches to NATO forces and has an excellent reputation. My preference is for a larger watch compared to the 38mm size that makes up much of their line. If you go with something from their Military line rather than their FX or Classic series, you'll get one that is at least 40mm in diameter. This is definitely a solid company.

Good luck with your watch shopping. Take a visit to TimeZone for lots of discussion and photographs.

Thanks for the replies,

I will look into the IWC's and Rolex watches, I may have to save for awhile to be able to afford one. I may also just go with the Tutima.

As a Tutima and Rolex owner I think both are great. I have no complaints with either brand watch I have.

i agree as ive had this rolex dive watch for almost 20 years and still works like a charm..i use it for scuba diveing as rolex does not make a small ladys watch..one needs to be able to see the face and as i broke all other watches and seeing all in asia where large watches so i now wear this 24/7......but a lot less costly one id get a casio g-shock.....this rolex is 4k and i bought it when i had $$ to play with

Hi All-

This is one very clean and legible Tutima at a massive 43.2mm in diameter and 14.6mm thick:

Are they buying you the Rolex or what? Why should they care what watch you wear? If they're buying you the watch, go with the Rolex. If you've ever wanted a Rolex, chances are you're gonna want it till you get it. Get it first and get it our of your system.

My mom and dad passed that stage quite awhile. My mom gave her Rolex to my sis to wear and now she wears a JLC Reverso. Now she's looking at Ulysse Nardin. My dad is still wearing his 7 year old Rolex and he abuses it. Chips and scratches and he still hasn't serviced it. He's kinda thrifty and one time he brought the watch to one of those small stalls to get the bracelet adjusted. The dude used a hammer to knock it into place. hehehe....
Before that he'd worn a Seiko for something like 20 years.
What he has always wanted is an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. I think he wants to get it for his retirement.

Most people don't know much about the watch world other than the big brand names like Rolex, Omega and Tag Heuer. I doubt a lot of people know about tool watches. My dad didn't know what was a Panerai. But he does know IWC, AP, JLC and all the high end brands. Just not the tool watches like Sinn, Fortis, etc. Although he did mention Bell & Ross once.

But if you're spending your hard earned cash. Buy whatever you want. Although when i plan on buying a watch i'd like it to be easy to service and parts are easily available. I don't like sending out watches to far away places to get it serviced.

about a month ago I was watch shopping... had to take my inherited timex in for repair work. Took my fossil in too, was told to send it directly to fossilfor warrenty work since thats all that can be done on it... My timex was supposed to be a one week job, just resetting the hands... it's gone back to timex for a new movement now, should have it back next week. It's already been a month since I took it in first.

Bought a basic G Shock (G100), been wearing it for the last month. Still going to wear my timex when it's back. Beat on the g shock all day, timex when I get home from classes and on weekends.

Have my eye on a nice Citizen Eco Drive for $300 but thats gotta wait.

For a great value in an automatic diver, check out the 200m Seiko series based on the 7s26 movement. They are sharp looking, available in a variety of case/face combinations and keep very good time. They're also tough as hell. There's even the option of modding it just to get it the way you want with a visit to www.mkiiwatches.com .

Certainly, been wearing my 7s26 based Diver's 200M Seiko "Black Monster" for two years now. That's 2 years EDC 24/7.

My only fear now is that I can't justify that Omega Speedmaster I always wanted. :(

My Seiko should outlast me!

+1 on Timezone forums.

Rolex=Good watch, great resale. Great name recognition (ie buy insurance, crooks love Rollies).

A bunch of other brands=Exquisite watches. Nobody knows what you are wearing.

Hey Joe, I got my Seiko diver so I could give my Seamaster Pro a break and have something I felt less guilty about beating up.

They're both great watches. The Omega is better, but the Seiko is damn good for the price. The Omega bracelet is head and shoulders better even than the solid link Seiko bracelet. The hacking second hand on the Omega is also a big plus to me, and I like the bezel better as well. Not sure I'll ever need the helium relief valve.
