I'm looking to purchase my first "nice" fixed blade as a user. I really like all the Striders I've seen, but was wondering if there was one "gotta have" or one that was a basic to start out with.
any suggestions appreciated.
thanks in advance,
Derek

For a small one, HT or DB. For a big one, MT or WB. PAB for a chopper and a PH for a sticker. I'd say MT overall.

My first fixed blade is the MH. A great all around design for a field tool with a blade that has a lot of weight at the tip.

Which ever one you get will look good with the tiger stripe finish, and it should have a cord wrap handle - that makes it a STRIDER.

Ditto Knifebomber, but I would recommend the WB as the best all around Strider-with cord wrap.

First of all you need to ask yourself what you need the knife for? Then tell us what you need the knife for and you will get a more specific answer to your question. As it stands right now everyone will tell you what they like for there use. So please let the forum know what you want to use it for and your question will be answered in no time.

No problem, Vinnie. I'm a civilian, don't cut people out of cars or do anything hardcore for a living-so let's face facts. I want one really just to have one. I've got a good many folders, but no nice fixed blades, and want a real good one. I'm not taking out sentries, amputating arms or legs (but you never know!) or cutting a school bus off of nuns. I'm more curious as to what Strider knife is the "one" to have above all, or which is a good start, and get a broad range of opinions to make up my mind. Don't get me wrong-the knife will get used-but probably more yard work and hiking/camping rather than anything else. I'm not trying to sound like a wanna be or a pogue or anything-I just like nice stuff and wanted to get the opinions of those that have been there and done that with their knives.
thanks,
Derek

I prefer the WB. It is the basic, all around bad ass knife. It is not terribly large, but it is very tough. It is based on traditional japanese tanto designs with a swept edge for better cutting geometry. It is the perfect start of a Strider collection or the one Strider that will do everything.

My two cents,

I just think that the spear point is more versatile in it's ability to do tasks, but hell, is there a Strider that can't do everything?!

Hope you didn't take me the wrong way, I just thought your question would be best answered if we knew what you were using it for. At no time did I think you were a wanna be or a pouge, just trying to help you out the best way possible. And for your use I would agree with Josh. The WB would be the perfect Strider for you. I will warn you though Strider Knives are like tattoo's once you get one you'll want more and more and more. Good luck to you and I hope you get what your looking for

Not a problem, Vinnie
I know how it can be frustrating when someone asks something like "what's the best gun for me?" Or "What's the best 9mm round..." etc
no offense taken.
I'm not sure what I need, and am "shopping" for advice.
cheers,
Derek

I agree.

I'm sure we've all been there before, "I'll get the spearpoint cos it's versatile, but I need the WB cos I just need it, but then I can't carry a fixed blade all the time so I'll get the folders, but when I go camping I'll need the Bad Axe,oh but then I have to get the PAB to hack at the vegetation and I just have to get a CQB for my drop holster..etc"

Ok, If I may, I'll offer my opinion.

To me personally that'd be Strider MH.
BTW as I have found MH is Strider Webmaster's personal favorite too

I guess Mick and Duane designed that blade with the geeks in mind

Anyways, I think as a field knife, or something like all around one, MH is very, very good. May be I just miss the beauty of the tanto point, but for cutting I still prefer something more conventional, such as clip or spear point.

Also, no mater what Mick says about the handle ergonomics

, the G10 handle I have on my MH is one of the most comfortable out of all my knives, and I have no complaints about it's security either. Ok, ok I havent't tried it with bloody and oily hands, otherwise it's just fine.

Because of the choil MH does fine with finer cutting tasks, and it's a good chopper for it's size too. BTW yesterday I was experimenting with stabbing into the phone book, no steel drums though. MH outperformed practically everything I have tried, including SOG recondo, with it's slim tanto blade.

What I love about a Tanto is its sheer strength. I know that with a Strider it isn't really an issue, but it is nice to have that extra spine all the way to the point. I don't think I would pound any of my spearpoints into granite, but I've done it to my WB more than once. Again its all about personal preference, get em both and compare em.

I personally really like the EBLT. It is a whole lot of knife packed into a fairly compact package. The only other Strider fixed blade I have (for now) is the MFS and it is great little all around knife. I used it to slice a dear tenderloin before grilling Monday night. The meat seemed to fall apart. I am really looking forward to my folder. All the comments about how great it is are driving my crazy. Shouldn't be much longer!
The next one after the folder will probably be one of the tanto pointed field knives. I would agree with others that the spear point is more usable, but I just love tantos.
