looking to buy my first khukri any ideas good all around blade
hunting fishing hiking and self defense any help thanks so much

BAS without a doubt if you use it for firewood collecting and the like or maybe a 12inch Siru if you don't need it for heavy work - but then again I don't have a Siru so I don't know it's cababilities !!

Try snag a PGA or Blem - otherwise ask Uncle, he will tell you what you need better than any and he makes good choices !!

I don't think you can go wrong with the BAS as Brendan suggests. The next knife to consider that can do just about anything you want on a camping trip is the 15"AK. Those were my first two knives and I still have them. I have others that I like very much, but I would never part with the first two that came my way.
I would not go to the little knives until you get a bit of experience with one of the work horses.
I know that a lot of people might agree or disagree, and many started with a little khuk. That's OK. They didn't stay with the smallest knives too long.

I don't think you would be disappointed with either of the two heavier 15" knives. Uncle Bill advised me on my first and that is what I am telling you.

BAS. Others would disagree, leaving you where you started.

The BAS is a good all round khukuri and moderately priced compared to the others. When buying something unseen for the first time my opinion is to be conservative. It's the same quality as the other models so you're not skimping on anything except maybe size.

15" overall length isn't too bad for chopping and carrying around all day. It would be my choice. Then again, I'm not one of those giants who frequent this forum.

:o

HEHE !!

just wait till HIKV gets you - you'll wish you were never on this forum !!

My short list:

BAS
AK - 15"
Sirupati - 18"
WWII - 16.5"

Think about what you want to do with it. Heavier is good for chopping stuff. Lighter is easier to swing, better for small diameter stuff and brush. But heck, they're all very capable multipurpose utility knives. Just send Uncle a check for a hundred bucks or so and see what shows up. ;)

Go with the chiruwa AK. The handle feels great and the AK fullers are beautiful to feast yours eyes on. At about 16.5" it's about the best all around size.

How bout one of each model that HI makes:D

In all seriousness I like the 12" AK for more controlled knife activities. Bigger blades are better for bigger projects, like chopping down trees though. Though you can use a small knife for bigger projects as well. So I guess it depends exactly what youre planning on doing with you knife, chopping down trees etc... or small more precision knife like things. Oh well Ill join the boat and say get the BAS, itll start you in your collection of khuks...:p

Most of the khuks mentioned (other than UNcles suggestion) are moderate in price and in size. If you're over 6 foot tall and got some meat on ya, and are not adverse to carrying a few pounds of steel, go big. Like the 18" range. The AKs will be the heavier in this sie, but you'll find that the Sirupatis, kobras, and gelbu specials in this length can do good chopping work without being too heavy. You figure each blade comes with its own by-knife, so if you go big on the Khuk, you get a nice sized working knife as well.

I'm only 140 pounds or so and I feel pretty good with my 18in WW2. I haven't weighed mine but it is supposed to be around two pounds. The only problem with its size is that I can't cut small brush and stuff like that because I'll tire my arm out stopping the swing. Fortunately, I can use my right or left hand equally well for chopping so I don't really get tired.

The Kumar villager that's up right now would make a heckuva good starter, and the price is right.

I got a 15" AK as my first one. I can vouch that it is awesome, and makes my C___ S____ Trailm@ster feel like a wimpy butter-spreader. The bowie chops OK but nothing like this. I was so impressed with it that I have an 18" sibling en route to keep my firstborn company. I need an 18" AK because it is different, not better or more useful. People won't look at me funny when I tell them it's bigger and has a wood handle. If I got a BAS they might ask me things. When I get a 25"-30" Sirupati or Kobra they will really wonder, but by that time they won't have the nerve to ask.:D

15" is indeed enough. However one HI khukuri will never be enough. Ever.

If you want to see how this love story began, please do a search of HI forum on 'boreal carnage' and read the bottom two threads from start to finish. You will laugh. You will cry. It's better than 'Cats'. :barf:

All the best,
Phil

I've got a BAS, WWII, Chiruwa AK and 21" GS on the way. I've bought a BAS for my father in law and gave him my my Kumar Villager (sniff sniff).

The villager actually felt very good in my hands as the grip was the same length but much thicker in diameter. The satin finish also makes you want to use it more as it is not as pretty !!

The WWII is 18" and it rocks but I chipped my handle so it needs repairing. Feels great and works like a charm - nice weapon character too.

Chiruwa has a VERY nice feel to the handle and it is a pure work -horse, you wont break it !! TRY. Fullers nice too. I took the sheath tip off too (it's my user and I don't like being stuck in the leg)

BAS is well the biz. Brilliant And Sharp, I've heard it refffered to before and it is just that. Nice weight not too big not too small (when I got it, it was my first so I thought it was big but now it's a baby !!)
It is the most efficient chopper out of all but that is because I can't sharpen to save my life (yvsa is slowly making that right though) and it stays sharp for some reason.

That's my 2 cents worth of experience so I hope it helps.#

Happy Khuk huntin and welcome to the cantina

Brendan

FWIW, I recently bought my first khukuri, a HI BAS from another forumite, after wrestling with the same question for awhile. I wasn't sure what to expect, and I was very pleasantly surprised when it arrived. About the only thing I've done with it so far is clear some brush in the back yard. There's a pretty good pile to be burned due to the quick work of the BAS. It's a keeper.
