Hey guys, Just looking for offers or advice/opinions on buying s30v bushcraft or field type knife with BURL grips. I particularly like the maple, but am not opposed to most grains and woods. Having lived in alaska, I gained appreciation for birch and other woods not native in my south texas home and upbringing. Anyways, thanks in advance and this is my first time posting on computer instead of iphone or ipad haha.

Moved to General Knife Discussion.
The WTB section is for classified style threads (ads) only, discussions are more fruitful in other areas.

I would recommend looking into BRKT, while not S30V you will find steels much more suitable for field/bushcraft tasks. S30V makes for a good folder, and in some cases a fixed blade. The majority of knives in the "field/bushcraft" genre consists of non-stainless steels such as 1050 series, 1095, CPM-3V, A2, O-1, etc. These steels are heat treated to offer greater toughness than say S30V. This is certainly not the law and can vary wildly by whom you ask, but I've seen 97+% of bushcraft knives use these steels and very little use S30V.

I'm thinking you should look at Bark River Knives. They don't do S30V but have some great knives made of S35VN. They use a large variety of woods, micarta, and other materials for handles.

The leuku's and puukko's of the Finnish and Nordic knifemakers is probably as far as you'll need to look. Best examples of the "burls," maples, birches, etc. that I know of short of the custom makers. I've also found them to be the best bush knives. You can buy them separately or in combo usually.

Start with J. Martinni Knives--outdoor, sporting and bush categories. Google will pull up the rest of the makers.

Thanks guys! Sorry bout the wrong place. I will look into all of those and start saving lol

And yes, I've always used 1095, just looking for something a little different, maybe less patina and more satin

I also recommend checking out the BRKT's. My Bravo-1 in A2 steel has performed very well in bushcraft tasks and has always cleaned up nicely:

That's one fine knife, I'm trying to get the Wife on board lol. That knife really is my first choice in burl maple or cocobola. Do you like the thumb ramp? It looks useful for my tasks but would like your opinion

I know a lot of guys don't like the thumb ramp, but I don't mind it at all - I like the aesthetics and I actually use it as intended to strike a firesteel. And I do have a rampless "field" version (in Cocobolo), but I always carry the ramped versions.

With upgraded BRKT dress sheath:

Derek here was the guy that caused me to buy a BRKT Necker 2 by using photography alone. ;)
I do not regret that purchase at all and the knife is excellent.

Yea. Bark River.. The Bravo 1, Bravo 1.5, Bravo 2, Gunny, and a few others are available in s35vn which is somewhat close to s30v (without getting into steel specifics). Go to knivesshipfree.com or dlttrading.com

Also I personally like the one without the thumb ramp.
