Looking to find an appropriate neck knife

I'm looking for a neck knife that has a blade of 2.75"-3.75", that's relatively light, thin (flat), minimal print, kydex sheath or something similar...

I don't want something that looks too agressive - like the ones shaped like a claw where you put your finger through the handle, or the S&W design...but I don't want something too homely either.

I'm also not interested in cheaper "throw away" knives - even though having an inexpensive knife does have it's benefits.

What I like is the clean quality look of the Camillus Talon - but I've read that Talonite is heavier than steel, and I haven't been able to find out how much the Talon weighs....and I'm not sure that the Talon will be thin enough with the grips...

Anyone have any experience carrying a Talon?

If you don't think it would be a good choice based on what I'm looking for, do you have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Cary

To make your chioce even more difficult check out the Pikuni coming from REKAT soon. It is designed by Rob Simonich, the same knifemaker that designed the Camillus Talon. It is listed on the REKAT Forum under "Comming Soon From REKAT" or something close to that title. It is suppose to have a blade length of 2.9 inches with the overall length being approx. 6.5 inches. It is suppose to be a great little neck/ utility knife.

ZZ- there are so many custom makers doing high quality, reasonably priced neck knives its hard to tell you where to begin. If you go to the links here, click on custom makers, and just start browsing, you won't believe the selections. Neil Blackwood, Ray Kirk, Chris Hatin, etc. Have fun! BTW, welcome to the forums.

Great Examples!!

Hey Barry and Mr Dockrell.. what are the prices of the models pictured. Both look perfect for Neck Carry!

Ray Kirks Lil Blue II sounds like what you describe. Blade length is right, its very this, not heavy at all and very nice looking.

UPDATED and REVISED

Take a look at Pat Crawford's neck knives
at his website www.crawfordknives.com. I've
had the drop point for some time and have found it to be a very handy knife. It has an acute point and decent belly (for a knife this size). The whole package is quite flat and lightweight, I think you will find it is what you are looking for. Take care.

Hey everyone - thanks for the posts, they were most helpful... The wealth of selections is incredible - I've been spending about a week just trying to research different styles and makers of neck knives, and it seems like just when I think I've seen it all I see 4 or 5 new models that catch my eye...

The ones that I liked most were the Chipmunk from the review in Senator's post (if it were a little bigger, I probably would have gone for this one), the knives by Larry Chew from the posts in the link by Esav, and the one by Barry Jones does look like it would fit the bill for what I was looking for....

But when I finally got around to checking out the new Pikuni, I just couldn't pull myself away from the appeal of the designs by Rob Simonich - there's something about it that just grabs me (heh, but hopefully never stabs me

). So, I read through the thread, and talked myself into biting the bullet and placing an order to try for one of the first few with carbon fiber scales. It's too bad Rob Simonich is too backlogged to get a custom made by him - the pic of the one he posted looked sweet.

I'm sure this is only the beginning for me and my soon to be neck knife collection - I started out with folders... a benchmade 800 AFCK for pocket carry (imho, an incredible utility/defense knife for pocket carry)... Then I fell for the Mel Pardue 330 (lightweight, small, clean and well made) to use in situations where the AFCK tends to freak people out... Then I was introduced to the world of neck knives by a friend, and I've been on the hunt for one ever since...

There's a little bit of a wait for the Pikuni, but I'll definitely follow up with the a review of how it works out for me..

Thanks for the help -

Cary

Sorry Richard and Ripper - just saw your posts since you and I were posting at the same time...the speed of feedback here is incredible - and if anyone has any more suggestions, please post as I'm sure the Pikuni is just the beginning of a neck knife collection for me....

Senator - I noticed you have one of the chipmunks - what do you think of it? The 2" blade is on the small end, but the size of the knife itself may be one of the best features when neck carry is concerned..and the sheath does look well designed...

Barry - how much is the model you posted?

Zerozappa, if you are referring to the S&W neck knife with the whistle inside the sheath, that is not a S&W design. That is Darrel Ralph's Krait neck knife design, and it was stolen by S&W.

Hello,

Look at some of Ed Charvar's (spelling?) knives. They are very nice. There was an article in one of the magazines within the last year. It shouldn't be hard to find. Good luck.

Be sure to let us all know what you decide on.
