I've been looking at a couple of different Bowies and can't find too much info about them other than what is on the sales sites. The two are the new A.G. Russell 1862 Pattern Bowie, and the Bark River Limited Edition Bowie (8.5 inch blade). I'd like to hear from someone who owns either and can comment on the general quality, fit and finish, balance, etc. Also any comments on the blade steel (AUS-10 on the AG Russell and 12C27 on the Bark River). From what I've read here and there they both appear to be reasonably decent steels.

Am also looking for any other recommendations on decent quality Bowies in the $200 - $250 range. Thanks!

Both knives you mentioned are made by quality manufacturers. But I would go carbon or tool steel, not stainless, for a large bowie.

My favorite Bowie is the Randall Big Bear. Use the 200 fore a down payment and order one.

The one on the left...

I say talk to John of JK knives and get one of his bowies. They not only look great but I am pretty sure the can be had for around your price range. Plus you could get one with a coffin handle.

The Canal Street 1873 Bowie can be found for $225 or so online...made with D2 steel and ebony.

Thanks for all the suggestions - I will check some of these out. Not too fond of the Randall Big Bear but while I was looking at it on the web I found the Randall 12-9 Bowie which is pretty sweet. A little more than I want to spend. That Canal Street looks nice.

So, no one has seen the AG Russell or the Bark River? Well, if I bite on one of those, I'll post a review. Thanks again for all the info!

I tend to gravitate more toward the slimmer Bowies, but that one looks like a real cutter.

Take a look at the Blackjack Model 1. Made with A2 steel and available in a varitey of handle materials, this knife falls in your price range. I don't have this exact same model, but I have a BJ 125 and the quality is excellent.
