Looking to get a Fallkniven A1. Any reason to get the black blade?

I'm in the process of saving pennies, giving blood, selling first born, etc. so that I can buy a Fallkniven A1. I was originally planning on getting the Teflon-coated blade for the protective coating, but the price is generally ~$25 higher.

Assuming:
  • I don't care about the blade being reflective
  • I don't care about the color of the blade (black or silver)

is there any reason to pay more for the Teflon version? How long does it last after 'typical' (subjective, I know) field use?

I've also been looking at ESEE knives. They are definitely easy on the eyes. :D

Thanks for any insight.

I own the F1 S1 and A1 , all in satin(non-coated) finish. From what I've seen and read the black coating wears off easily and offers no real advantages. Most people I've seen getting the coated blade regretted it for the above reason.I would recommend the plain satin version.
As far as Esee is concerned , they are outstanding knives. 1095 tool steel,Most models are flat grind. Great multi-purpose knives. My favorites are the 4 and 6, although any model will provide outstanding service. Just research the models a bit to see what you'd prefer. Best warranty in the business.

If you don't care about the blade color or reflection, then there is no reason to get the black coating. Expecially since the laminated VG10 is stainless and doesn't need a coating, and the coating on the Fallknivens wears off very easily anyway.

As for ESSE, they are also great. The coating on ESSE's lasts a long time, which is good because the blades are not stainless underneath like the Fallknivens. Either brand is an excellent choice.

Satin!!! Shows of the beautiful quality blade!! Just got my 1st Fallknivens, A2, S1, & an PHK. Blown away by the quality!

I generally prefer uncoated blades unless the coating serves a purpose- covering a carbon steel blade.

Unless you do top secret missions against the Taliban, you should get the satin blade.

For all the reasons already mentioned, do not bother with the Ceracoat coated blades.

Fallkniven does all things well with their knives, the exception being the coating.

Ive got an A1 and F1, both satin blades. The stainless laminated VG-10 dosent need any rust-protective coating, besides the satin makes it look like a new knife for a long time.

The black coating isnt very durable i have been told, and if you google some pictures you can see that it looks ugly as hell when it starts to wear off. For some odd reason, i dont like the worn look sported by coated Fallknivens.

I agree with everyone else. Get the satin finish.

As for ESEE knives... their good but I would never choose one over a fallkniven ever. ESEE coating is much more resistant to wear but, like all coatings, wear off in time. If you want to go carbon steel, don't forget to check out the Becker subforums.
