Hey guys. I originally bought a plain grip with satin blade & combo edge in 154cm. Not a combo edge guy (don't even knife why I bought it) so I gave it away. I enjoyed the action. I next bought a cables exclusive D2 but the black blade coating wore ugly & wouldn't flip how I enjoyed the first one I bought. I'm thinking about doing a custom carbon fiber, m4, all black hardware, short deep carry clip. Anybody have this combo or have anything to say against the idea? Other exclusives you can recommend? I see flytanium also sells replacement scales but I'd rather buy benchmade if that's a possibility for the best bang for my buck.

Depends what you’ll use your knife for I think, since my recommendations for M4 vs 20cv vs s90v would depend on use.

Personally, I’d do G10 with M4 for hard use. M4 sharpens easily and it’s a tough steel.

If I wanted cf scales I’d get s90v or 20cv... I like s90v because of its light Stonewash type appearance.

I have an M4 full size with jade scales for sale over in the buying section, severely marked down from what the custom shop would charge you if you’re interested...
But all that being said, the Griptilian is a great knife and fills the hand well. Definitely meant to do serious work.

Well benchmade M4 doesn’t come in non coated so the patina is out with benchmade griptilians as far as I know.

M4/cf sounds good to me. Although if you arent set on m4, dlt trading still has their carbon fiber/m390 exclusive for about $40-50 less then BM custom shop one you are looking at(not including taxes/shipping).

Or if you find a second hand m4 blade with handles you don't like, you can get cf scales for it like you mentioned. I never handled the flytainum cf scales, but there is also lots of custom makers that can make them for you (and for cheaper). And a handful on this forum, ie: rival customs, death of all things, keyman, and I'm sure I'm missing several others.

I would just recommend putting together the best version of a Griptilian in your mind, then making it happen. That way there's no reselling/regret going on.

I currently carry a spyderco military cf/ti in s90v. I'd like something that can take a patina :)
In that case, m4, that you would have to strip the coating. Which isn't very appealing for a very expensive knife. Maybe you could email/call Benchmade to see if they could make an exception for you to get a non coated one? They are pretty cool about that stuff sometimes.

My latest was finally put together about two weeks ago. It’s a mini grip sheepsfoot in 20CV with custom @deathofallthings scales. I love this knife.

I usually say mini Grip 55? Great edc, not killer, not a little (but good) pocket knife, ya know?
I have a 154cm plain edge and I dont need it every day but it kills.
You know BMKC has a customizing site!

And also an example in the jade? Does M4 patina easily and nicely? Do you guys find with ZERO blade play the black coating on the blade makes opening less smooth than an uncoated blade?

I'm curious what benchmade carbon fiber looks like.. anybody have an example?
Benchmade carbon fiber is preferable to Flytanium imho. Flytanium is very very slick.
Blade play is dependent on how tight you make the pivot.

Benchmades are hit or miss, even from the custom shop. I’ve had some come in perfectly tuned, and some not... but when they come in right, they are among the best knives you can own.

I know how to tune a pivot, I'm just curious how

I know how to tune a pivot up nicely, I'm just curious If the same paint like black coating that is on my cabelas version is the same coating that comes from benchmade.

Didn't mean that to come off sounding rude. I adjusted both my non coated and coated blades the same. The coated one was just never as nice

Benchmade has changed their coatings over the years. Whatever the ceracoat on my Super Freek is works great. Does show a little wear but it's holding up nicely. Feels and looks a lot like dlc but I doubt it's as durable but I could be wrong.

My 950 has a different feeling on the coating, and it's an older knife and I haven't put it to much use yet, so jury is out on durability. The new stuff is good to go imo. And my coated blades flip just fine, and the areas the washers sit are bare, so the coating doesn't impact action.

Personally, a g10/m4 grip would be an amazing knife. I have the g10/20cv sheepsfoot grip and it's an amazing knife, great action, and I would get a custom with m4 and G10 in a heartbeat. But they don't do uncoated m4 blades so you may not like that.

Why is the m4 option for bare in the custom section on their website? Or am I mistaken on the color? I'm thinking jade g10 now with all black hardware. Sheepsfoot, now I'm unsure on m4 if it's not bare (because... patina) short deep carry clip.

So here's a statement and a question...

From what I've read on here and other areas, even if I strip the coating the m4 doesn't patina. since that was my only reason for it, I'll go uncoated s90v. Does anybody have a photo of the carbon fiber they use on the shop customs? Slick? Rough? Shiny? Dull? Thick? Thin? Flat? Contoured?

If memory serves, the CF option is relatively new for Custom grips. Since all the rage seems to be targeted at their Bugout lately, you may have difficulty finding anyone dropping that kinda dough on a Custom grip these days.

I'd second the D.O.A.T CF scales. I've got several of them myself. You can work directly with Ryan and have something made up just how you want it. Going with the basic plastic scales in the custom shop also knocks off a significant amount on your total price. I think using that savings toward a set of D.O.A.T scales would be more bang for your buck ;)
