Hey im new here so bare with me...

I want to buy my first legit and amazing fixed blade knife. My friend wants to get a cold steel..but after reading here people aren't high on them. So I wanted to pose to you guys, what is the best fixed blade knife out there that is about 5-7" preferably around 6"? Also I'd prefer to buy it in a store, so that said I'm in the bay area in cali, so any good stores out here. I can go anywhere PT goes. Also any thread or forum for this that I can read to get a better sense of different knives, and materials, etc?

Cheers

Becker Knife and Tool BK7. Come see us here in the BKT forum, we'll hook you up.

If you are anywhere near Costa Mesa, you can look up Plaza Cutlery, they have a good selection.

Welcome to BladeForums. You are probably not having success because there is no "best knife." There are knives that are better (or some feel best) for certain tasks....but "best knife" is like asking "what's the best car?"

If you tell us what you want to do with the knife...then members can help.

yes, just let us know - intended use, what type of environment it'll be exposed to (boating, etc), and any legal limitations (sharpened clip point, etc) and you'll get all sorts of suggestions.

btw - i don't know where you got the feeling that there's anything wrong with Cold Steel, but there isn't (other than maybe their customer service)

Well...let's just say nothing good can possibly come out of this...Im JK. umm I have an infatuation with fixed blades, and I want to have one for every all purposes. I'm also doing some combat training and that's essentially what this will be for. I'm not too sure how I can explain this. But yeah I'm looking for a solid knife that is light but not super light. and i'd prefer to have it around 6" or maybe with a 2-4" inch blade. Does that help more? And by best I meant like which fixed knives stand out at the top.

well i read a thread on cold steel http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...Steel-Spike-series?highlight=cold+steel+spike that one and i came out with the impression they aren't that good.

I guess environment would be everywhere and anywhere. As in I make bring it camping one day, another I might be on a boat. So essentially it has to be pretty tough. As for legal limitations, I have no clue. I live in california.. does that help? I guess you can say im a knife noob

That's a tiny fixed blade..I'm having a hard time thinking of many production models are that are that small!

Hmmm maybe I'm miscalculating the sizes in my head. If i removed the size factor, what would you recommend? I meant 2-4" as in blade only size not including the handle. Let me know what you would recommend in general.

Well...there is no such thing as a "do it all well" knife in my opinion. Just as there is no such thing as a "do it all well car."

And do you want an "all purpose knife" or a "combat/fighting" knife...you kind of lost me there.

Also...how much are you willing to spend. We will eed to know that too.

You really got to help us a bit here.

And Cold Steel is OK...they sell pretty good "starter" blades. But with the advice of people here, you can do better, in my opinion.

Waht we recommend for what? 2 inch bladed fixed blades exist, and are great for some things, but not all things. A 4 inch bladed fixed blade is ENTIRELY different than a 2 inch one.

sorry that im being so difficult. What i really want is a fixed blade combat knife, and I guess then an all purpose fixed blade knife. That said, make your recommendations. disregard size unless you want to factor it into your recommendation. As for price, Id be willing to spend 100-150 on combat knife and no more than 80ish on an all purpose knife. Now im also willing to ditch the all purpose and take that money to the combat knife and spend like 200. As for knife size in my mind I want a medium sized blade ideally. Not big where you cant hide it or stash it somewhere, and not to small where it's limited to stabbing. So now that i have my ruler out, Id say around a 4-5" blade. Does that help more?

Cheers

Yes. Why is that an issue? and No i wont be using it to fight. im not going out gun ho here. lol. i hope thats not what youre thinking here.

Invictus35 , most of the knives you may get recommended to you , you probably won't find in a store , at least in my experience.

for a small fixed blade that is very pocket friendly and cost effective , and sweet ! checkout the Boker "Krein Pocket Bowie" , for larger fixed blades I would recommend Becker , or ESEE for your carbon steel needs , Fallkniven S1 is a wonderful , high quality VG10 stainless fixed blade. Cold Steel makes some high value knives , you really do get what you pay for , the SRK , Trailmaster , heck even the good ol' Bushman are all great knives for the money.
There are also a lot of custom makers here with fixed blade offerings that are very fairly priced.

Bear in mind that most of what you read on forums is opinion , it is your task to sift out what you like. :)

Wait. So you want a fighting knife, but you don't intend to fight with it.

That's fine. I say just go with what you think is coolest looking. Nothing wrong with that at all. At least then you "get started."

Thank you!! I'll make sure to read up on all those. If you had to pick one larger one which would be your go to?

And I agree with Tostig...Cold Steel might actually be the way to go. Not terribly expensive, and many are in a cool/looking fighting knife style.

Great place for you to start. Request a catalog from them...then you get the DVD too!...which are awesome so many diffferent ways.

well i wont be fighting illegally if that makes sense. I dont plan on going to jail anytime soon. And the point of it would be to train and then if ever need be use it. sure there are other defense solutions. but i like this way better. and My friend will be getting whatever he chooses. I think he wants a cold steel spike series blade. or a tanto.

yeah i was htinking cold steel till i read a thread on them sucking. its above in one of my replies.
