Hey guys, I finally ponyed up the money for an Strider SNG and could not be more excited :). I've been doing some searching for a lightly used one to get some money off, and think I found a good one but wanted to run it by you guys first. I contacted the seller, he said it was bought from True North Knives about a month ago, and from that and the pictures it looks to have the new lock up, blade is centered. Before I go and pull the trigger, are there any red flags or something I'm missing? Thanks! And please, nobody else snatch this up before me ;)

Do not post links to live enay auctions. The only flags you're missing are reading the forum rules.

Here, no link:

I always advise first time Strider buyers to purchase a new knife from a dealer. Too many people buy second hand Strider's with blade play and then base their opinion off of somebody else's problem.

I have owned many Strider's and never had a problem with lockup, period. I bought most of them new though.
If you do choose to buy second hand, make sure it has the new generation lockup, as this one pictured, appears to. And don't complain if there is lockup issues with the previously owned knife. People buy these knives to use them hard, you don't know where that used knife has been.

ETA:
The only thing I see that is slightly off is the blade grind on the lock side. You can see that the edge is not totally uniform from the choil to the tip. Not a big deal though, if you know how to sharpen or have a guided sharpening system.

If it was a nice knife, you can bet it's gone. We've seen 'em sell in mere minutes...never mind hours.
Become educated enough (some good stuff in the above posts) so that you know what you're looking for (made and model, special grips, blade treatments) BEFORE you find it. And when you find it, be very certain you have your i's dotted and t's crossed, and then jump. There can sometimes be a bit of adrenaline involved. :) Maybe that's why we do it???

My list: tight lockup with no blade-wiggle up/down or rt/lt when holding handle in left hand and blade held at the tip. Centered blade when closed. With blade open and locked, lockbar on the tang should preferably be early...not more than 60-70% across the tang, and preferably much less. Look for easy opening/closing of blade, no stickiness. Check for scratches on the blade. The titanium scale, in a used knife, will have some small use marks and scuffs.

Thanks for the advice guys. I made a bid of $300, I figure if it goes above that I'll just purchase new. I have a few more questions. Who are good dealers for strides, do we have any on the forums here? I was going to go with True North Knives but $28 for shipping seems like a lot. Also, if I buy from a dealer am I likely to get a strider with early lockup and centered blade? I guess if not i could request a return. Then last, I was reading that you can send your knife into strider to have it adjusted when it develops play and also for sharpening or any other issues. Is this true?

Bidding your max price with 4 days left on the auction is probably not a great strategy. I wait until 5-15 seconds left on the auction and then enter the max I'm willing to pay... ...bidding early only drives the cost up, most ebay auctions are won in the final few seconds.

I expect this knife will go quite a bit higher before it ends. You may have better luck keeping an eye on the "For Sale" section, things often sell for more than they're worth on ebay but you can find a deal every now and then here.

Other than that it looks like a nice knife to me. I think the brown or green g-10 looks a little nicer but of course that's just my opinion. That knife looks like the new lockup.
