My buddy is graduating the academy to be a state trooper and I am looking to get him a knife and was looking for some recommendations. They aren't aloud to use the knife as defense because they are not trained in knife combat and can get sued since the state won't cover them. Now he may be able to use a auto knife but I can not purchase one to gift it to him but you can recommend some and I can forward it later. I was thinking something along the lines of a recon 1 tanto, would love to hear what you all think, serrated non serrated tanto tip etc. Thank you all

I have several Benchmade Triage knives. They are perfect knives for any first responder. Solid construction. Lifelong quality glass breaker seatbelt cutter. The main blade comes several ways. Coated non coated. Sheepsfoot partially serrated or straight. Or an opposing bevel that has a flat tip for prying.

It’s not a “weapon” it’s a “rescue tool”.

hi

I volunteer as an EMT and this is what I carry.

Gerber 06Auto Tanto Serrated
Swiss ArmyKnife Handyman (thinking of switching to a Leatherman the new ones with one hand opening)
Leatherman Raptor Scissors Green

probably the most important question is can you open your tool with gloves on.

kind regards
Matt

I'll second the Benchmade Triage. I'd go for either the 917 Tactical Triage with a partially serrated blade or the newer 365 Outlast, which has two blades: a regular plain edge blade and a serrated flat tip blade that can be used to pry. Both have a glass breaker and a strap cutter.
Whatever you get, I think you should get him something with serrations on it. They're not ideal for EDC, but for a duty knife where you never know what you're going to encounter, I think they're a must have.

I would look at the cold steel lawman instead of the recon. And not because its called the lawman, the size may be better.

My suggestion would be a light weight folder, in the 3-3.5 inch range.
Steel will cut jack- full size or mini
Spyderco delica or endura.
Rat 1 or 2
Kershaw makes a bunch.
If you really like your friend get a zt 808.

Never heard of sheepsfoot what are the advantages to it?

It’s point is in a position to prevent stabbing the person you are rescuing.

Designed to slice but not puncture. It came from sailing. Less apt to have accidental stabbings on a moving boat or punctured sails.

In my opinion, Benchmade's quality control is no better or worse than Spyderco or ZT's. Their warranty is great though, and if you do have a problem, they'll fix it immediately (just like Spyderco or ZT would).

On duty I use an old Emerson Mach 1 that I bought used off of a well known on-line auction site and have an old Ritter Benchmade Mini Grip in my go-bag in case I forget the Emerson. Both are sturdy-nothing fancy. Decent steel that holds an edge-good for the more expected uses of opening boxes, cutting seating belts etc. Since they were both purchased used with a fair share of scratches, I am not worried about adding more "character". Everyone that I know in the department carries a folder of various brands however, I have yet to see a SAK or Leatherman. That is not to say that they aren't carried, only that I have not seen anyone carry them. There is already enough stuff to carry on the duty belt so the knife goes in the side trouser pocket with the pocket clip.
