looking to make my first custom

i have been collecting knives for the past 5 years and have decided that its time to take the next step. i would like to try to make my very first hand made custom knive. does anyone have any input on what kind of materials to use for a first blade. i want to do something thats not too difficult to try to get a hang of it. any blade shapes that are easier or handle types. if anyone is willing to give any input and help me out that would be much apreciated. thanx
