Looking to make my own sheath/pouch kit similar to the Lost Mt. Ironworks item...

...anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking there may be an appropriate Maxpedition pouch/pocket that I can either attach to a sm/med Kydex sheath, or one that I can attach the Kydex sheath inside with the kinfe removable through the top without opening the pouch/pocket. I've seen the ones forum members have made using the small Max. strobe pocket, but I'm looking for something just a little larger....

Thanks for any input or photos of what you've come up with! I'll post any ideas I have as I start looking through my Maxpedition stuff (I have a bunch of their pockets and pouches) and examine their products on the web.

The frustrating part is, it would be very simple to make if I could find just the right pouch/pocket to use! Right now, it looks like Maxpedition's EDC Pocket Organizer or Anemone are my best bet, but they may need some mods....

My post from a similar thread:

I use Kydex knife sheaths 85-95% of the time. I don't often attach anything to the Kydex sheath.

If I feel like I should attach stuff to my knife sheath I strap a MOLLE utility pouch to the Kydex sheath. I have been using pouches by HSGI and ATS.

This is a Busse NMSFNO in Mashed Cat Kydex with an HSGI Mini Radio pouch attached to the paracord with Tactical Tailor MALICE clips. That's two pieces of green shock-cord to hold it down to the sheath really tight (not necessary in this instance) or to hold something else.

The same size pouch can be attached to a smaller knife in the same way or the small knife can be put on the front of the pouch. There are so many MOLLE pouches out there that can be used this way.

Two days ago would have been a great time to order from skdtac.com at 16% off everything. They have a great selection of pouches. Be sure to show us what you make.

A kydex sheath could probably be rigged inside something like an HSGI EOD or Mini EOD in a similar fashion to that LMIW setup you linked above, but I would probably just attach it to the front or back of the pouch for my use.

I finally found an unused HSGI Mini EOD pouch lying around and threw this together. This pouch is about 6w x 7.25l x 3.5d. I slipped the sheath in the back inside pocket and then secured it to the rear webbing with some cord. I put it there so that I could get to that and the other pockets. I could also secure it to the inside. Another way to prevent unintentional opening of the zippers is to attach shock-cord or paracord in the back of the pouch and then buckle around the front.

The knife is a Scrapyard War Dog. The sheath is from Rainwalker Creations with his SKDS, which I would remove if I intended to really use it this way.

ETA: The Maxpedition FR-1 pouch appears to be about the same style and size as the one I used. Look at all the pouches at SKD. I'm not trying to push you to buy from them, but their site allows you to set it up to view them all on one page. (It is also a great place to shop.)

I think I'm going to use the Maxpedition Anemone. Enough room for firemaking stuff and an outside pocket for my GPS or small camera. I had considered their EDC pocket organizer, but it's a little larger than I need. The ESEE pouch seems just a tad smaller than I want.

I'm done, and it turned out to be MUCH easier than I hoped!

I found that the Kydex sheath for my Busse CABS would fit under the PALS webbing of the Maxpedition Anemone pouch perfectly by slitting the center stitching of the top two PALS webs. The back of the Tek-Lok would also slide behind the webs, allowing the pouch to be attached securely to the sheath while also being easily removed if desired.

The CABS and Kydex sheath with a large Tek-Lok:

The back of the Maxpedition Anemone pouch, with the center stitching cut away from the top two rows of PALS web:

Inserting the sheath under the top two rows of webbing which have had the center stitching removed:

One of the removable belt-width adjusters has been removed, while one remains, so the Tek-Lok fits around the PALS webbing:

Finished! A five-minute job!!!

The whole thing can be either threaded or clipped onto my belt. The Tek-Lok has a locking clip, making it as secure as a a normal sheath's belt loop.

Now, all that remains is to decide what to put in it!

Very ingenious. I have been thinking about making a similar sheath for my BK-16, just to be able to have a full kit containing my main knife, fire kit, some bandaids, a small flashlight and probably some water purification tabs which I can just keep in my pack everyday so I have the essentials with me if needed.

I'll get myself one of these Anemone pouches, or maybe a Strobe Pouch from Maxpedition, and make a sheath that fits like this. Thanks for posting.

Great job!

Nice sheath from Mashed Cat!

Thanks! Eric makes a very nice Kydex sheath, for sure. The size of that one is what made my project so easy. It matched the Anemone's webbing perfectly... a great coincidence! The Busse CABS was not my first choice of knife for this project, only because of its rounded spine (not good for scraping or making sparks with a ferro rod). I'm considering grinding a flat section into the spine to make the knife more woods-friendly.

Thanks, and you're welcome. The Anemone is just right for a couple of pieces of fatwood, a mini-Bic, AAA flashlight, Ferro rod, some MicroPur tablets and a roll-up water bag.

I know I'll be rigging up another one, and I'm itching to try out one of the products from Skinth Solutions. Their Trailblazer pouch looks perfect for this kind of thing. Take a look at that one. I can't resist buying one much longer!

Very nice job - it looks a perfect fit. It's great when that happens!

Should you ever want to do a larger sheath like this, Pantac do a pouch that's just about the right size, the 'Molle Vertical Pouch, PH-C818-BK-A'. It's about 8.75" x 3.5" x 2.25" so would fit on a big chopper quite nicely. I have a few bits of Pantac stuff and it seems reasonably well made, just a little below but a lot cheaper than MaxP.

Strangely enough, I often look out for Lost Mountain Ironworks sheaths on the exchange, and didn't see any before you posted this. Since then a few have popped up on the Busse sales forum but all far too pricey for me.

Update: I picked up a couple of Maxpedition M-1 waistpacks on a buy-one-get-one-free deal and made another sheath pouch. I took a few photos to show the size comparison to the Maxpedition Anemone pouch I used on my first project. The Anemone pouch is now mounted on my Fallkniven S1 sheath and the new M-1 waistpack is on my Busse CABS sheath.

These items fit with plenty of room to spare in the rear zippered compartment of the M-1, leaving the front pocket free for my camera and GPS or whatever else. (Top; l to r: water purification tablets, water storage bag, spare set of contact lenses, space blanket, 20' cord. Middle: Fenix EO5 flashlight, Brunton pocket compass. Bottom: fatwood pieces, mini-Bic, ferro rod w/striker, fire straws.)

I think the M-1 is just perfect for this application and I'm already wishing I didn't give the second one to my girlfriend (who will probably never use it!). ;)
