I need to get out of the NYC area... I feel like a caged animal....I'd be willing to commute as I manage to crowd my 40 hr work week into 3 days. looking for a place where there is room to breathe and play, small game hunt fish...and raise my son so that he is familiar with nature...I was talking to a co-worker who is approximately 30 years old yesterday I mentione camping and he replied "I've never been camping" It is not unusual where I liv to hear this but to me it sound ludicrus...money is a factor in terms of moving I was thinking about the pocconos in PA as property can be purchased relatively cheaply...Ive only been there several times, and to the more touristy areas... is anyone familiar with this area, as well as the flora and fauna..I'd also be interested in exploring other places within 2-3 hours of NYC..(I'd also consider changing careers, but that's a whole nother ball of wax) I guess at this point I'm just rambling...or venting...thanks for listening.

I think pocconos might be a good idea. I live in Pittsburgh, and PA in general has a lot of great fishing and hunting areas. If I were you I'd try and move closer to the WV border so you can go camping and white water rafting.

But that is just a personal favorite of mine, so I'm bias.

Cool thanks pratt...Is all of the pconos settled and touristy.. are alre there still places one can bug out?

Honesdale PA. about 40 min northeast of Scranton PA. you wouldn't believe the numbers of new yorkers moving to that area and still commuting to NYC every day. there must be a reason!!

i'm a transplanted new yorker myself....its the best move i've ever made (Harrisburg PA).

BTW, home prices in the honesdale area are ridicuo;ously low compared to the tri state region!! i'm talking like about 50% lower.

Cool, Thanks Bill, I'm assuming there are numerous opportunities for outdoor activites there??

Come to the south. Your son will appreciate all the hot chicks and camping year round without digging a dang snowcave.

I've read a lot of stories about folks who worked in Manhattan but moved to the Poconos and then spend 6 hours a day commuting. That might be a worse Hell Riley. :(

Nova Scotia, Canada!
Not sure you are up to moving out of country, but you will never meet friendlier people.

Why not Virginia? Local economy is particularly good in the Northern zone near DC and the Tidewater area near NC. Plenty of beautiful nature, decent climate, generally nice people. It's been good for my family!

Lots of outdoors activity in western and central Virginia -- or you could hop over into West Virginia. You could even visit New York, when you felt nostalgic.

OP,
I missed out on a shot at VA last year. A co-worker got the job I was buckin' for and kinda screwed me out of my "get out of jail (Detroit) free"card :grumpy: yeah. he's an assclown.

Looks like he isn't happy there and I might get another shot at it within the next few weeks (if all goes well).

My wife and kids are on board and are pulling for me and the relocation offer. If all goes well, by late summer I'll be in the Front Royal/Winchester/Martinsberg, WV area.

RR,

Seriously, best of luck to ya brother. I grew up in a big city and never did feel like it was home. I understand how you feel 100%. I camp, fish, hike, mtn. bike and hunt whenerver possible. I like living a block and a half from the local market, bar, and greasy spoon but would trade it all for a trout stream, some woods and a less hectic way of life right now.

Ahh. Then again, Like you, I'm probably just venting and prayin' for the best...

Chris

Mabey south jersey, Pine barrens area, There are some really wide open areas, Land is cheap (for Jersey) some places, hunting is far more popular, It is probably the only "Wild" part of NJ left, Just watch out for the Jersey Devil

Or mabey take a trip on Rt 78 once you get past morristown and 287 it opens up alot, there are alot of rural areas in Hunterdon County NJ, and once you get to PA it gets even better. I am looking to relocate from central jersey, in a couple years, looking to mabey Hamburg or Harrisburg area. I spend time in those areas every year and love it.

Did you ever consider becoming a Canadian? I live in Northern BC and our town has 1,000 lakes within a 100 km. that have sports fish in. Quite often I take off from work a little early, catch a mess of tasty rainbow trout on the fly, and still get home for dinner (I cook the fish). Not to mention the hunting. We have a 10 acre property where we board 3 horses and cultivate an excellent vegtable garden. Every evening I walk our German Sheppard in the back 40 (actually about 400 square miles of wilderness). People around here still carry knives and rifles (during hunting season) with no problem. Prices for houses are dirt cheap (outside of the major cities).

Good air, good water, great people, no crowds, low noise levels and great nature.

Different politics than you Americans are used to (we didn't feel as a country that Iraq had weapons of mass distruction, so we didn't go) but you could get used to that.

it does sound nice. How far north are you ? any jobs?

like RescueRiley Im getting restless. Im in CT and over here its looking more and more like NJ -- houses and mcmansions linked by shopping malls and highways.

BC sounds real nice I've spent sme time in banf, and victoria beautiful, beautiful stuff. If I could convinnce the wife i'd be there already.

I agree that is why I will never leave Texas. Of all the place I have traveled I cant find a place that beats this state.

There is lots of work in Northern Canada if you have any skills at all. The recent statistics show Canada is about 400,000 people short of skilled labour in about 200 fields (everything from medical, to construction ). Actually I am in the Prince George area (center of BC), but most people refer to it as the North. Am visiting family in the Terrace/Kitimat area at present on the North Coast. Its all good.

Weather can be a challenge at times. I got into ice fishing a few years ago.

Hey rescue, explore Jersey a bit. Head west from NYC on 280 to 80. Newark, the Oranges, then all of a sudden...mountains! The Watchungs. Keep on going to the NJ/Pennsyvania border and the Del Water Gap is beautiful.

My wife and I would make it a day or weekend trip often. Nice day, nice drive, recharge the batteries a bit, see some trees, and hills, its nice. Get back to, in our case, Jersey City, a little more adjusted.

Texas is nice. I've got family in East Texas from Galviston to Ft. Worth.
