Hey guys. I currently carry a fiskars x7 Hatchet and a silky big boy xl. Looking at maybe a junglas? Anything else out there to look at? Is the junglas a useful tool for trimming back branches and hacking at things you’d use a hatchet for?

Always good to have a big chopper in the arsenal. Easier for me to use a large knife rather than a small hatchet for clearing small branches and limbs. Plus you can baton with it if needed in the event that the axe goes down.

Adding to what shane45-1911 shane45-1911 mentioned, I've had both the Junglas and and a BK-9. Currently only have the BK-9. Little less blade length (1.5 inches), but just as capable as well as better ergonomics imo. Feel it's the better value of the two as well, being 30 to 40 percent cheaper depending on where you shop. Don't really think you could go wrong either way though.

Depends on how much $$ value you put on that legendary ESEE warranty. Having said that, the Kabar/Becker warranty is no slouch either...

Saber grind in the ESSE is much higher (almost full flat) compared to the Becker. Given the same blade thickness the ESSE should be a better cutter (more acute angle). How about the weight? If you plan on swinging that machete style... lighter might be better.

I like the Mini Duku so much I bought two. Convex grind like in the hatchets.

I vote for the Becker BK9

I have both.

My hands are fairly large, most knives feel way too small for me.
idk who the Junglas is made for? It feels way too tall in the palm.

The Becker is more contoured/refined feeling.

so unless your hands are HUGE, Id go with the BK9 (and the BK9 is big, just that the Junglas is really big, feels like you are holding a 2X4)

I can do a comparison after work, if needed?

Same here. And I have 4 Junglass's.
Junglas is a solid big knife with a decent Kydex rig.
That , my Silky KBoy , Fiskars splitter , and any one or two of numerous 4-5" bushcraft knives I own cover pretty much all I gotta do in the woods.

I ordered a junglas no sheath with an armatus carry sheath with dangler. Knife was $116 and sheath was $90. Can’t complain.
Good choice getting the no sheath option to save the money and a separate Armatus. A good sheath can make all the difference, especially with big knives.. danglers are the way God intended most knives to be carried anyway imo.

So the ESEE JUNGLAS or II factory sheath is no good? I read the ESEE sheath is pretty good, at least no complaint for my 3, 4, and 6.

I looked at the BK-9 when I purchased my J2. I like both KA-BAR and ESEE products but in this instance preferred the micarta scales and kidex sheath of the ESEE to the plastic scales and polyester sheath of the BK. I've since dremeled the scales for better grip and personal taste.

Scales and sheaths are readily available for both, so not a deal-breaker either way...

I handled a Junglas and an Ontario 8689 and ultimately decided that the Junglas wasn’t worth 3x the money so I bought the Ontario. I would have liked to handle a Skrama too but couldn’t find one and didn’t have any friends with one.

It isn’t something I use much, anyway so YMMV.

Can’t say I feel like you need a junglas with that outfit, but that’s just me. I’d go for the JG-5.

The production sheath for the Junglas is one of the Best in the industry.
It a big reason why lots of people chose that knife.

The factory esee sheath is perfectly usable. I just feel the Armatus sheath is a little more refined. Plus you can just option it directly with a dangler or text lok, without having to swap out hardware, which I much prefer to belt loop carry..

I sometimes actually prefer the soft carry sheaths that come with alot of factory knives depending on how I am going to be carrying it, as it easier for me to quickly strap it on a pack... such as my BK16 I keep on my out of town backpack. Simply stuck in a pocket and attached in the back by a d-ring..

I have armatus sheaths for my other ESEE knives and didn’t figure I’d use one of the four retention options on the ESEE one besides the actual retention of the kydex. Plus, at the price the Junglas was and wanting to try the Armatus anyways, it was a win win.

The Junglas eill be adequate, the BK-9 very comfy, but for pure hacking and hatchet substitute I would go with something like the Condor Bushcraft Parang. Not so pretty as the ones above, but more capable IMHO.
