Hey guys, it looks like I'm finally going back to college. Saturday after I got home from a campout I reapplied to go to Snow College down in Ephraim Utah. I've been thinking about this for a long time and feel that it's time to finish school and get into the field I want to.

Sunday I applied for Finantial aid (Pell Grant, Loans and Work study) and just found out that I'm aproved for a full Pell Grant and Loans/Work study will be up to Snow. The Application fee was mailed off Monday so hopefully I'll know something this weekend or next week. If for some reason my application is rejected at Snow College, I'll apply to UVU in Orem, so I'll still go, just not to my first choice.

For a while now I've wanted to get out of the bigger cities and into more rural areas and I've wanted to finish school. Have been wanting to get into Parks and Recreation/Recreation Management for a while now. The Physical Education Major at Snow College is setup to start students on that path. Going to talk to a counseler as soon as I get my acceptence letter to see if I should do that or get my Generals and Transfer to Utah State in Logan.

Will be heading to my mom's house in Spring City (12 minutes north of campus) Thursday evening for the weekend. Going to visit Ephraim Friday morning to check out housing and visit the student center. Then I'll probably spend the evening fishing up Epraim canyon or at Gordan's pond on the north side of Spring City.

School at Snow starts August 25th. My housing contract here in Provo is up on August 7th. So I'm planning to move out some time that week and stay at my mom's house for the 2 weeks leading up to school. My last day at Best Buy will probably be the end of July or August 4th or 5th. If I go to UVU I'll move to Orem that week instead.

I've been in Provo for almost 8 years now and collected a bunch of stuff. Started selling some of it off over the weekend in anticipation of moving and starting school. Over the next 2 months, I'll probably be selling off a few more knives and gear to help cover student fee's Down payment for an apartment and misc. expences before my Finantial Aid kicks in.

Things have changed a bit at Snow since I went there in 2000 to 2003. And college life will be different now that I'm 29 years old. Any advice for an older student or a student starting college this fall? I'll be a Physical Ed/Outdoor Rec major so if you have any words of wisdom conscerning this, I'd really apreciate it. Also, is there anything that you know of that I should buy that will help me in school?

Make sure to live in the dorms (coed) and don't tell anyone you're 29! This next part is very important:

YOU ARE 21 AND CAN PROVIDE BEER! Or better still, tell them you are 19 and have a fake ID.

Start watching the Twilight movies. Memorize the lines and do your hair like that kid in the movie.

You can thank me later.

I've thought about it myself a couple of times, Heber. I've submitted applications and was approved for a couple of different schools, but never followed through after that.

I don't want to switch careers as I really enjoy what I do for my family, but it's been a nagging regret that I don't see myself finishing up anytime soon. With a daughter on the way in less than 8 weeks, I don't think I'll have the time to do anything regarding my education.

Long story short...go get 'em:) Oh and being the exact same age as you, I can tell you that campus life will seem incredibly alien to you. I stopped off at my old college stomping grounds a few months back. It was surreal. The place looked exactly the same, but all the students looked like....kids.

I have the utmost faith in you:) You'll do great:thumbup:

Best of luck and congrats!
I went back after only a 3 year break, and it was an adjustment.
Try not to argue too much with the grad assistants younger than you teaching classes, especially the ones who are "experts" because they've read all about it.
If you have a polar (hard left, right, or centrist/libertarian) political view, keep it to yourself.
Only other piece of advice I can think of is to watch out for the girls who are only at college to get their "MRS" - they're dangerous to your bachelorhood & bankbook.

Again, best of luck!

Oh heck yeah, Heber:)
Right on man. You will do just fine. You are young enough AND old enough to 'GET' it.

Glad to hear this:)

Heber, good luck with your decision.

You have gained insights and skills that the recent high school leavers have no comprehension about, so use them to your advantage especially as you readjust into the college lifestyle and mindset of those without your experience.

And enjoy yourself along the journey. :)

Congrats on a great decision being acted on Heber.  :D For a lot of us you have chosen the ideal occupation!!! :D  Let me be among the other good folks in wishing you the best in your endeavor's!!!

Congrats Heber, go get 'em. You're at a great age for college, old enough to have some wisdom and experience, but not too old to be that crank who is unable to get along with the whippersnappers of the newer generations. Have fun, make friends, best of luck.

Thanks Jake! The other day when I was applying for School I noticed how young the students looked in the pictures on the college website. They totally look like kids now. Did I really look that young in college?

Best of luck and congrats!

Thanks for the advice about politics. I'm a little more politically minded now then when I was in college and the reminder to keep quite is a good one for sure.

Girls looking for their Mrs. Degree scare me a bit. Will definantly keep an eye out for them.

Heber?

Enjoy every sandwich.

You will do well.

Thanks, though I'll have to learn to make my own Gluten free bread. ;) But I do have a Mean Corn bread Recipe.

Thanks Mark. My family said something to that effect the other day when I told them of my plans. Hope it rings true.

Excellent, man!

Best of luck to you!

Thanks!

Thank you. Back in 2002 when I was still in college the first time I started thinking about changing majors. After school I want to work at a State/nation park, Dude Ranch/Resort or work for an outdoor rec group that leads tours/expeditions.

best of success to you! It will be an exciting time.

Guess i missed this about you, the gluten free thing. I was diagnosed with celiac disease about a month ago myself.

Take care!

Congratulations on continuing your education and following your dreams! The career field you have selected is tough to break-in to due to the overwhelming applicants for each position. Additionally, except low pay! I have both a BS & MS in Outdoor Recreation field with a minor in Wildlife Mgmt. Not trying to burst a bubble only a heads up. Good luck in your ventures.

Found out this morning that I was accepted back at Snow college, I'm on academic probation so will need to get my grades up but I already new that. Talked with advisement this afternoon and figured that I should get my Generals now and worry about a degree later.

Talked with a friend that Teaches at Snow College and it turns out that he is teaching English 1010 summer term. Class started a few days ago but there is still time for me to get into the class if I want to. If so, I'd start ay the 14th. It's a 3 credit hour class that would cost me $481 in Fees and tuition. Going to think about it this afternoon and sleep on it tonight before I deside if I'm going to take the opening in the class. It would mean getting a head start on my classes, but it also means a 1.5 hour commute from Provo to Ephraim and back each week. My Boss at work says that I could go to school Monday through Thursday (hats when the class is) and work Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Not sure if I want to live in 2 places for 2 months..

The adviser I talked to said it would be best if I retook the classes I failed then finished my generals and went from there. I felt that was good so that is what I'm going to do. Got to retake a communications class, some math and maybe some PE classes. So I'm starting there.

Tom, thanks. I was diagnosed with cluten intolorence at the end of last April. Will be 14 months in a few weeks. Was sick for months before we found out and flad we did. Some other people in my family are intolorent to gluten and at least 1 niece has celiacs. So we feel you pain. Good luck with it and if you need some help, feel free to email me. I'm no expert, but my sister knows a ton and I can relay info.

Thanks for the information, you're the second person today to say that to me. Since I'll mostly be taking Generals I wstill have some time to deside if Recreation Management is the right thing to do. Lots of towns in the Provo/Salt Lake City area have recreation centers/departments. Guess I should talk to them about job avaliability.

....

Yes. ;)

Good luck!

Congrats Herber!!! I've been thinkin of doing the same thing lately myself.

As for advice for a non-trad student... remember you're older than the general population (and it hurts more when you hit the ground) :D. I had to adjust my thinking some when I first went back to school at 36. The young kids can party all night long and still get up and make it to class (well, most of them)... but it just ain't so when you get older.

Good luck with the move and classes, etc! You'll do great!

LOL!! Found a picture from one of the Formals I went to in college and you are so correct, I look really young in that picture. Thanks!

Dang, Ain't that the truth.

Got my acceptence letter from Snow College on Monday and got some more housing information. Also the bill for class showed up this week. Guess I'll need to sell some more knives and gear to help pay for school.

Turns out that my housing contract is up on the 14th of August instead of the 7th as I previously thought. So this leaves me with just over a week at my mom's house before I move into my new apartment. This gives me an extra week at work which will be nice. Will probably spend the week before school starts fishing and camping in the mountains above Spring City and Ephraim. I want to spend a night or two in the mountain valley just south of North Tent mountain which is between Ephraim and Spring City. Camped there 3 times when I was in scouts and have always wanted to go back. I'll be posting a thread about the trip shortly.
