Loop for ferro rod on knife sheaths

I have observed a number of holding loops on sheaths with ferro rods pushed into them. I think that it looks like a good idea and probably helps with the sell ability of the knife and sheath system. Don't you think that after a couple of uses it would thin down and not stay secure in the loop? Would a pouch ,like one for a stone, that closes be better? Do you think that the rferro really used is in the pack and the ferro on the sheath a spare? Just a thought.

something i do anyways, even if the firesteel hasnt been whittled down enuf to be loose. is use a piece of stretchy cord as the lanyard, then loop around end of steel. keeps it from going anywhere. the esee firekit comes like that.

the steel will get a little looser w/ use (that would take a fair amount of use), but it's always a good ^ idea to have it tethered in some fashion

they do indeed get loose with time.. i always tether mine around the other end..

here's a pic of a sheath i made recently for my iddleback Terrasaur...

I like the loop, I have enough stuff in my pockets already I alway fasten mine in some way or other.

I really like the idea of using shock cord as a lanyard and for securing to the sheath.

One other suggestion I've seen here on the forums is to go to your local home improvement store and pick up a few o-rings that fit your firesteel securely. Just slide one on the bottom section when it's in the holder and that should help keep it in place. I haven't tried it yet but it seems like a pretty good idea to me :)

Don't like the loops or carrying a firesteel on my sheath myself. I prefer using a dedicated striker and I don't really use my firesteel nearly as much as my knife. So a firesteel and/or other firestarting components in a firekit suffices for me.

im with kdg on this one i find that i dont use my firesteel nearly as much as my knife and when i do i never use my knife as a striker

When I first saw the fire steel loop I thought it was a good idea for a ceramic rod.

There is another thought about it too. I like one on my sheath but because I carry two when I carry them, I use the one NOT in the sheath. The one in the sheath is tethered with paracord but I don't use it because of the "COOL" factor. I like it looking new. It would be my last ditch firesteel because if I'll I'm left with is the knife, I've still got that firesteel and it's ready for hard use over and over and over and over because it's not worked down to the last bits of metal. Besides, the custom firesteels I stick in the loop are way more expensive than the little "users" I buy for practice and woods use.
