My garage sale Schrade 165 has a loose guard. The scales are tight. Should I drive the pin out & see what's what or should I just live with it? If not for your 165 raves, I would have passed this up, so I turn to you for guidance. Your forum is great.
Thank you, Willy

Well, it kind of depends on your intentions for the knife. A hard user, an occasional user, a display knife.

If you are going to give the knife hard field use, I would re-peen the pin. Look close in bright light, and you will see a brass pin (usually finished flush with the guard). Use a flat punch the size of the pin or slightly smaller. Then refinish the brass flush.

For light occasional use, I'd just add a drop of crazy glue to take up the slack.

For a display, the looseness won't matter.

At any rate, congrats on acquiring a good Schrade knife! Try as they did, I don't think the design has ever been improved upon!

Glad to see Codger got another one addicted to these darned 165's.
At least he doesn't get a percentage of garage sale and flea market sales.:D

Willy, you sure asked the right guy for info on the 165's!

Thank you for the information. The knife will certaily be used, so I'll tighten the pin. You're right about the design, that strange looking handle just feels right in my hand. The carbon steel takes a great edge & the acquired patina adds to the character of the knife. Thanks again, Willy

Dang Willy!! It took you just three lines what it took me pages to say!!!

Is the pin visible? If you can see the pin below the level of the guard, place that side down on a hard smooth surface and tap first the guard on the other side, then the pin. I use a hard plastic hammer on the brass, or pad it with a piece of leather, then use the drift punch on the pin. Once the guard is tight, turn it over and peen the pin lightly again to tighten it.

PS - They made an Uncle Henry version too!
