I just got a Leatherman Surge. I was going through all of the tools and noticed that the saw blade in the blade exchanger seems to have some play in it. There is enough play that when I shake or tap it the saw moves around somewhat loosely. Is this normal? I swapped it in and out with the file and it was still was the same. Should I take this back and try to exchange it for a different one or is this normal for this tool?

Mine locks up tight. I'd take it back and get an exchange on it. Sounds like a defect.

Thanks Clead. I'll try to exchange it.

REI, on their website, indicates that the surge has a 154CM blade. This isn't true is it?

That must be an error. I've been carrying a Surge for quite a while now and it has never been a 154CM blade. Just the same stainless steel they use on their basic models. That would be sweet though, to have 154CM steel, the clip-point knife on the Surge is one of the biggest on any multi-tool.

As for the blade exchanger being loose, you best have that looked at by the LM people. They have a great warranty program and sometimes they will replace any broken or defective parts with new one's, no questions asked.

I compared a Surge and Wave at a local Walmart. In the closed position both rattled when I shook them. I didn't like that at all....... don't know if that's normal or not.

Well, I ended up just returning it. I had gotten it from Costco. They actually took it back without even asking any questions. They seem to have an amazing return policy. Anyway, I decided that the Surge was bigger than my purposes needed and I saw a Charge Ti on sale on the REI website. So, I have a Charge on the way.

Charge Ti - on sale at REI if anybody is interested.
