Loose scales...

A have carried a Swisslite on my key-ring for a few years. Really annoyed today to find one of the scales is lifting. It's happened with other well-carried Wengers and Vics. Usually my favorites. I have two options, neither of them really great. (1) Pull the scale off and then epoxy it back on - fine if I do it well, if I don't the scale never quite seats right again and it is harder to remove if I actually need to. (2) buy new scale - which is a mail order deal from here in NZ and most overseas suppliers charge a lot shipping which makes it a very expensive option (shipping can be way more than the cost of the scale). <sigh>
Another reason to favour alox IMHO.

Without buying new scales epoxy is the only way to go. I have heard people using the Goop epoxy with good results. Contact Defender at sosakonline.com as he might give you the right way to go about this correctly.

Pop them off and just put a little dab in each rivet hole so you don't end up with a mess. Goop is good so you can remove them easily if you want later. Otherwise 2 part epoxy is good.

Since you got a 'few years' of service out of it, it sounds like you've gotten your money's worth out of it. Buy a new one and pass the old one on to a friend. That's what I've done after making sure the old one was cleaned and usable. :)

Check out rotokid on SOSAK. He ships internationally for a very reasonable price and you can get any color you would like. You can also get G-10 or carbon fiber for $10 and many different exotic hardwoods.

Yeah - That's a good point. Nothing last for ever in daily use and for the price to replace it owes me nothing. I guess it's the issue that one part fails while the rest is still serviceable that bugs me. Steel outlasts plastic, knife cuts paper. I'll epoxy and get over it. Thanks.

Dropping them on a hard surface can cause the Cellidor scales to come loose. As stated, epoxy is a good solution. Next time, get an Alox model.

I would go this option. I have ordered regular scales from the shop and shipping was cheap and the scales arrived quickly. Having G10 scales would be pretty cool although I am not sure if they come with a slot for the toothpick, tweezers, pen, etc.

macdo, is there a Victorinox service location in Oz you could send your knife to? I'm in Canada, and found--online--the address of the Canadian Vic service address. I emailed them to ask about fixing a broken scale on a 20+ year old Champion I have, and they emailed back to say they would do it FOR FREE!

I'd have to pay for shipping to and from, but not for the labour and not for the part.

See if you can do that route. I figure Australia is a big enough market--and shipping rates for you Kiwis to there are (I assume) favourable enough--this may offer a workable option.

Good luck!

Matt
