Loose Sheath Repair

Just a quick question:

Several of my Khukuris have loose sheaths. By loose, I mean that if the handle points even slightly downward when holding the sheath, the khukuri slides out and goes sailing for my toes. That has happened twice so far. Luckily I am young and have pretty good reflexes, but obviously this is dangerous for both me and the knife.

How would you fix this problem? In kenjutsu, we would paste washi (thick paper) around the inside of the scabard to make it tighter, but this method is fairly short-term, and also not waterproof.

I would greatly appreciate any ideas and feedback.

Scabbard fit and ajustment has been a frequent topic of discussion, and I'm sure there will be several good ideas. For starters, though, here is a thread from the archives with suggestions by Pala, among others.

I have the opposite problem with some of my khuks - the sheath is too tight. This can usually be cured by cutting away some of the flap of leather tucked into the mouth of the sheath.

To solve your problem, therefore, I'd suggest the reverse solution ie glueing in a small scrap of leather, in much the same way as you'd use paper for a katana. If you stick the leather on with cyanoacrylate glue, it should be both waterproof and pretty permanent.

I've done something similar with scabbards I've made for swords. It seems to have worked so far...
