Loose Sheaths

I need to tighten the sheaths on a couple of my Khuks. One is really loose that if you turn it upside down, the blade slips right out. Seems like the sheath is almost too big for the 9" Baby Chit. The other sheath is loose in the neck so the 13" Katunje blade slips out about 3-4 inches and then the thickness of the spline holds the knife from coming out. Not sure what's the best fix? Any suggestions? Thanks Wally

There are a couple of quick fixes for a loose scabbard. You can try soaking the scabbard in water and letting it dry over night(with the khuk out of it, of course). That might shink it up. You can also try to restitch the back by pulling the leather tighter. However, the cheap, easy, and lazy way to do it (i.e. the way I do it) is to just glue in some leather shims at the mouth of the scabbard. This should increase the friction enough to keep the blade from rattling around. Good luck:)

I've read the page about using water and belts overnight. I need to loosen a scabbard, and have tried wetting it and sticking wedges down the opening, but it hasn't worked. I want to be able to get my FF out easily. Any advice for expanding the opening permanently?

Yep. Easy as pie. Take off the frog. Use a screwdriver to remove the chape. Cut the stitches and remove the leather covering. Scrape out the carved cavern using a chisel. Reassemble. Tada!

Edited. I couldn't leave that up on ya Chris. Thats a LOT of work. One way to permanently loosten a scabbard would be to slice away some of the leather that is glued down in the mouth of the scabbard. Use a scalpel for this work and go slowly, testing often. If you stay away from the immediate lip you may be able to hide your cuts from normal viewing. If its real tight then just cut that leather off at the rim and remove the parts that go down into the mouth. If it tends to come unglued then wet it slightly and gorilla glue that sun of a gun back down. As the glue dries and foams up a little wipe away the seepage with mineral spirits on a rag. When you're done, use a black sharpie to blacken any visible glue line. Voala.
