Loosening a pivot screw

Howdy BFC! So I just got my first liner lock folder today, previously the only folding knives I had were some old Schrade lockbacks since I've always been more of a fixed blade guy. It's a Puma Tec 700 that my dad got from the Puma factory outlet in Solingen, Germany. Its a great looking knife, although the edge could be a little sharper, but the action is REALLY tight. I wanted to loosen the pivot screw but the one on this knife isnt your standard torx screw like on say the SOG Flash II. Is it possible to loosen this type of screw?

Almost all pivot screws are adjustable. This type of screw requires a special type of tool, and is similar to the one strider uses (I think). I'm not sure where you could get it but try asking in a hardware store.

You can also try an Allen/Hex wrench. Just make sure you test the grab of the tool when it is on the screw. A lot of people become impatient and strip screws because they think they have the right size, ends up being small and destroys the screw. Just rock it back and forth, if there is play in the tool when on the screw, you need to size up until there is NO play at all. Practice sharpening the knife.

You might give it a few days (or a week or so), before trying to loosen the pivot. Many knives will loosen up a bit on their own with use. And, if you're like me, you'll soon develop the 'muscle memory' for a one-hand opener. Might not seem quite so tight after you've practiced with it for a while.

Also, if the screw is loctited in place (glued), there's a greater risk of stripping the head on the screw if you try to loosen it (especially if you do it with a driver that doesn't fit the screw snugly). Be careful.

Better you wait a while for all the parts to settle in with each other before you go tinkering around with it.

Yup. A drop of lube wouldn't hurt. It will work itself in as you play with the knife. A little tight is way better than too loose. :)

My sentiments as well.

BChou-E29 , bear in mind the pivot screw may have loctite on it which mildly complicates your issue.
