i was on my way to nursing school today when my brakes went out:mad: scared the merde out of me. i was driving along at 60 mph then go to slow down for th turn off the bypass to my school and the dang brake peddal goes all the way to the floor. thank god there was no one coming. i started pumping the braked and finaly built up enough residual pressure to slow down to about 50 after that i just kind of coasted to a stop in the parking lot. the mechanics said that i blew my brake line. im just thankful it was me driving and not my wife or it could have been alot worse. well im done for now just wanted to spill the beens in my fav place to hang out
see ya
doc silas:D

I hope you took time to clean your pants before you posted. :D

The emergency brake operates on a cable - not a hydraulic line. Pull that, and you'll come to a stop... eventually...

Glad it came out alright, Doc. Would'a been sorta ironic, considering where you've come through.

I about had a heart attack on my daily drive today too, luckily it wasn't quite as bad a situation as yours.
I bought a new truck about 2 weeks ago (not affording it, just paying for it....you guys all know how that works). Its an F350, 6 speed manual with the 6.0 powerstroke. Quite a ride. Mom was pretty excited and had to buy me a set of floor mats for it. Got a real nice set of rubber ones, good and thick and not slippery. Somehow the floor mat got slid over a little bit today as I was driving down I-70 and when I tried to speed up and change lanes the pedal caught the floor mat and got stuck pretty dang close to wide open throttle!
So I had been going about 55 cause traffic was tight, and sped up to about 60.... took my foot off the pedal and the damn thing just kept getting stronger! Boost gauge hit about 23psi, motor starts to howl and in the blink of an eye I'm pinned to the seat going 80 on my way to 90 and about to run over the cars in front of me
Was about to throw it out of gear when I figured out what happened and popped the pedal back up with my toe. Had the pulse a little high there for a minute though :)

yeah its realy scary being out of control. ive been around alot seen and done alot of things but short of gettin shot at this has got to take the cake for the pucker factor award.

Never turn off the engine when your brakes fail. You just might lock the steering up, or lose power steering.
Emergency brake is just that...an emergency brake.

Except it is actually a 'parking brake'. It stops the wheels turning and the car rolling away when you are parked and in neutral. The popularity of automatics and the 'Park' position has confused the purpose of the parking brake. My sister inlaw has never used the parking brake in her automatic, whereas I use it every time I am stopped at traffic lights. I have always driven a manual gearbox car! :)

The correct procedure is foot off the gas, change into a lower gear on a manual, or D1 on an automatic and apply the parking brake. You will coast to a stop.
