I live in L.A. and used to carry a folder in a sheath on my belt. I decided to carry a different folder clipped in my pocket like a ZT 0200, or 0300, or maybe a benchmade adamas 275, all under 4" blade length. My friend told me 2 1/2" is the limit. Is This True? Any info would be appreciated.

This very topic was recently discussed at length in a thread entitled "Legal Carry in Los Angeles". It can be found a few threads below this one.

By the way, that link provided by Chuzzy630 is a good one. It's legally accurate and contains some good advice and knowledge of what could happen when dealing with cops.

I'm from Southern California and lived there for over thirty years. Anything over 2.5 inches and you're looking to get hassled.

thanks guys. it figures. i've lived in so. cal my whole life and i should know. i guess i've been lucky all these years.

kinda curious- at one time wasn't a 4" folder legal? i've been carrying since the 70's and never got hassled. but the article made me re-think it since i could lose my job if i run into trouble. i guess i'm supposed to look at my collection, how fun.

As long as you look clean-cut, you probably won't get hassled. I hear that 4" is the county law, you can't open carry a knife, and as long as the knife is used for as a tool or for recreation... it is legal. That's what I hear, I'm no expert.

Cops won't bother ya if you don't look like a threat. Now if you're wearing a Hells Angels biker jacket with a a black shades and heavy cowboy boots gunning a Harley down the street at 60. . .

Most of California follows state law regarding knives, some counties and cities have their own seperate laws.

Down here in San Diego county all we have is state law. Down here we can carry ANY SIZE folder conceald or openly (as long as the blade of the conceald folder isn't in the open and locked position. And as long as it isn't a gravilty knife, or a switchblade with a blade 2 inches or longer.

We can also carry a fixed-blade of ANY SIZE or design as long as we carry it openly

I've been living in San Diego for the past 42 years, I ride a motorcyle everyday wherever I go, my riding gear is old and somewhat ragged, I'm not clean-shaven, I've been carrying a fixed-blade openly for the past 7 years, several cops have seen me carrying it, none of them have ever said a negative word about it, asked to see my ID, or given me any hassle whatsoever.

The only time a cop ever stopped me because of my knife is when part of my motorcycle jacket momentarily coverd the knife and he warned me that technically it could be considerd "conceald" as a result. He never took the knife from me, never asked for my name or ID, he just gave me a friendly warning with a smile and I was on my way down the road.

I love San Diego, our knife laws, and the freedom we enjoy are great.
