Just spent the last week moving ask my files to external storage so I could backup my computer and last night my storage drive failed. Click of death. 6-10 years of files both personal and business gone.
Mostly just wanted to vent. Thought maybe someone could help even just to take my mind off it.

That sucks, but if you really have important stuff on there, there are companies specialised in rescuing data from crashed disks. Might cost a nice sum of money though.

Yeah, looks like $1,000 and up with no garauntee. It's worth more than that but I don't have that to spend.
Probably just going to cut my losses and move on.

I feel for you and I have lost files in the past or they become corrupted somehow. Guess you'll be doing more than one backup in the future. I do that by the way. After a while, the loss of the files exceeds any consideration of the cost of an external drive. I do two backups, but unfortunately, I am not as regular backing up to the second drive as I should be. So I could easily loose.

If stuff is really important, start local backups as well as cloud backups.

I ended up signing up for idrive.com plus I'm getting a new local backup.
I may add a teriary backup to another off site location as well.

Did the hard drive fail on the backup storage unit or was it a power supply issue to the drive? You can recover these files if you have the right piece of equipment which is a hard drive adapter kit. You remove the HD from the FUBAR unit, attach the drive adapter (SATA, eSATA, or another type) and then connect the power supply (integrated) and then the USB to your PC. It will read it as an external drive and you should be able to recover your files if the HD isn't fried. I've done it several times on various laptops and desktop units.
