I posted this in the General category, then realized there was a forum for Spyderco. Wanted to get opinions on this page as well.....

Last weekend I dropped my Endura in 75' of water in the Gulf of Mexico. Got in a hurry to cut an anchor rope and didn't use the lanyard ! Bought that knife when I was in the Army and it served me well for 5 years...a real loss.

Rather than buying a new Endura, thought I might try something new.

Here are the specifications that I am looking for:
* 4" blade

* Would like a thick bellied blade similar to that of a Sebenza. I am not real fond of the narrow/sharp point of the Endura in rough water.

* Very light weight, so I can clip in swimsuit and wear comfortably.

* Lanyard hole !

* No serrations

* Not too expensive, since I spend alot of time around deep water.

* Ability to handle long exposure to saltwater and fish guts.

* One hand opening.

Any help/opinions are appreciated !

Check out the Spyderco Native:

-It has a good 'belly' for cutting
-its available in a straight edged version
- the steel is more resistant to rust than the type used in the
current Endura
- the blade is just a tad under 4 inches
-the handle is both shaped and textured to be fairly slip-resistant
even when wet

Do a search in the forums for 'Native', you'll find this an excellent choice.

Maybe look at the Military, or if that's too pointy, the Wegner -- the large one isn't quite four inches, but I think it'd work.

The Native, on the other hand -- it's a great knife, but the blade is, I think, 3 1/8 inches, which'll probably be too small for you.

Unrelated question: Is 440V really more rust-resistant than ATS-55? I wouldn't think so, because I thought it had more carbon in it...

I still carry my old Endura almost daily, but lately my Wayne Goddard clipit is becoming an edc. It meets most if not all of your requirements.

Thanks for the responses. did a fair amount of looking this weekend...looks like the Wayne Goddard fits the bill.

From what I can put together, it looks like a discontinued model. Am I correct ? Anyone know where I can pick one up ?

Pathfinder26:
Be aware, the Goddard is a darn large knife. Great design, sure. But a few months back, I ordered one via the net and, when it arrived, I decided it was just too big to suit me. Didn't feel at all comfortable in my pocket or in my hands (and I'm not small - 230 lbs.). That's not to say it's not a great knife. But I was a lot happier after trading it off for a plain-edge FRN Endura. As always, YMMV. Whatever you decide, glad to hear you're wise enough to go Spydie! :D

It loooks like the Knifecenter still has some available. I bought my last one from the SMKW catalog but do not see the Goddard listed on the website.

The Goddard Ltwt. was a favorite. I was sad to see it discontinued. If in doubt, you can always go back to the Endura. The all time Spydie classic, IMO.

Pathfinder26,
Welcome to Bladeforums. I've tried to email you but you don't allow it. Email me about a LTWT Goddard. The LTWT Goddard blade steel is ATS-55. I don't believe it is quite as rust resistant as the old Endura. I may be wrong, hopefully I'll get a correction here before too long.

Cutting Edge is one of the few spydie dealers in canada.
