Lost my 806D2 - what's next?

Dag nab it, my 806D2 has gone and walked off! I know where I last used it and have turned the house and my truck inside out. Not there, or in my laptop bag or my desk at work. :grumpy:

It has been over a week now so I'm giving it up for gone. The worst part is how much time and effort I happily put into it to make it just the way I wanted, by removing the BT coating and ever so slightly rounding the hard corners of the spine and putting just a little bit of a concave curve in the front half of the spine to give it a slightly "persian" upswept tip look. The axis lock was so smooth, too.

Anyway, time to start thinking about what to replace it with. It was not my EDC, but was my "hard use, weekend, hiking" knife. In that role, I started with an Al Mar SERE 2000 then had an 806SD2 then a Spyderco Police and then a Spyderco Military, then finally arrived at the 806D2. All very good but my favorite so far has been the 806D2 and I had not intentions of ever replacing it.

Kind of like when you loose a good dog you do not want to get another one just like it, that is why I'm not going to get an 806 again right now.

My EDC is a large 2003 LE Sebenza and an Al Mar Hawk. I also have 2 balisongs (42MC, Spyderfly), a Pacific Salt, and a few Opinels. None of these really fit the role that the 806D2 filled.

If it does not turn up by the first of next month, I'm going to buy something to replace it. Of course, that will make it show up as soon as the credit card is billed.

Anyway, what's next? A 710HS? A good fixed blade like a Swamp Rat?

I'm open to suggestions...

Chris

First of all, I'm sorry to hear about your lost 806D2. I own one also, and I'd be pretty pissed if I lost that. I like that piece a lot.

Secondly, what are you looking for in your new folder?

If its not going to be carried to work and such, then I'd go with a good fixed blade. Maybe an ontario rat-7, it even comes in the d2 if you liked that steel on the BM.

I'm looking for a knife for hard use, weekend around the house and yard use, hiking use. Doesn't have to be a folder, though, but it is nice to be able to cary the knife around everywhere I go whenever I want - which is the only drawback to a fixed blade.

Yes, sorry to hear of your loss friend.

Anyhow, a 710 may help you get through this tough time.

Good luck on whatever you do choose, and hopefully the 806 will turn up in good time.

This is going to sound cliche'd, but I've heard really good things about the Manix. I think Cliff Stamp is currently abusing one at the moment, and it's holding up. I think there's a thread on the "knife reviews and testing" segment.

Spyderco Manix or Spyderco Chinook II. Manix more of the user.

Seriously...Why NOT get another 806D2? It's a knife that you are used to and feel comfortable with. I carry a BM 805, and I have a pair of 'em just in-case I happen to lose one.

Now this really seems to be the appropriate place to suggest a Manix.

You may have a point here. The real reason I'm not considering another 806D2 is that if it turns up again then I would have 2 of the same. It is something I have purposely avoided, seemed wasteful, but it's not necessarily such a bad thing.

Regarding the Manix, I am a big fan of everything Spyderco but the Manix is just too heavy for me. If the liners were TI and the scales were G10 one would already be mine. All of that and a 4" blade shaped like the Native's... drooool!

I'm seriously considering a Frost Mora from RagWeedForge.

I vote for getting another 806D2 and working on it to make it the way you want it just like your first one. After you do that, its almost guaranteed that you'll find the one you lost.

best regards

What is the best way to find a lost knife?

Tell your wife you are going to spend money on another knife to replace it!

Yep, told this to my wife yesterday and she found it later the same day. Happy to have it back again and will still get a sturdy fixed blade, but a little later this year.

Thanks for everyone's kind words and thoughtful suggestions.

Sounds like a Swamp Rat Howler or 'Coot would work nicely.

I carry mine (Howler) on weekends and sometimes during the week when I even remotely think the job could warrant it.
