My beloved Champion Betta, Alpha, died on Monday. He was 3 years old. I personally never fought him, but the breeder I got him from did. He was a beautiful red and blue Half Moon. I love Betta Splendins, just beautiful creatures.

This is Alpha, kind of poor lighting, but he had a beautiful blue shimmer body and red fins.

This is my new Pie-Bald Half Moon betta, still unnamed. In the first pic you can see the color of his tail which is what his entire body is. Black face and bald patch on top of his head. I keep a spot light in my tank hood so he can get out of the light if he chooses to. The second pic is of him in full display! He is in the corner out of his tank light posturing in a mirror, I don't want to use seperate lighting on him yet, he's still new and I don't want to stress him.

He has some ragged fins from the jars at the shop I got him from, his right ventral fin should be ok in a week or two and his tail filled out in a month.

He did build a nice large bubble nest last night, so I know he's happy for now. Hopefully he adjusts to my very hard water ok. I just love these little guys, I can just sit and watch them for an hour easily.

Taking suggestions for names, btw!

Beautiful little creatures. My daughter loved hers but I think she got too depressed when they died. They were very responsive whenever she went near their tank.

Yes they are! Conditional training through routine and repetition is possible, I had Alpha trained to come front and center of his tank when I tapped on it, he would also follow my finger. I need to work with the new guy still.

My Mom was given a red/blue half moon 4 yrs ago. (I believe that is what it is, looks like yours except more red).
He was in a vase with some kind of vine/lily.
We transferred him to a tank earlier this year and he's grown a bit and is doing very well.
He likes his wrecked pirate ship.
Mom and her grandchildren named him Kevin.

Is it my understanding that they can get pretty big in size? I've heard 4-5" in length.

Standard bettas can get about 2" in body length, finnage varies. I'm honestly very surprised it lived that long in the vase, most of those kits are just a death sentence for the fish! Some even state "do not feed the betta"

Good for you for getting a tank for him. Keep an eye on him in the decorations, they can get themselves stuck, or tear their fins. Torn fins is the #1 cause of fin rot. 4 years is a good run, keep him happy and healthy!

Anyone else, post pics of yours if you have them!
