Lost my CRKT M21, Considering a buck strider, or kershaw blur

I have had several CRKT's, a M21 and an M16. Both were fine knives, but I just want something a little different. Besides the CRKT's, I am new to knives in general.

At first, I was about settled on the Buck-Strider 889CB. But the blade steel kinda put me off. I would of loved a tarani with plain edge, but they can't be had anymore it seems.

Then I came across the Kershaw blur, and the lack of a finger choil (I think that's what its called) bothers me. I can get it in either Sandvik 13C26 stainless-steel or S30V blades for the blur. Which steel is better?

For around 100 dollars, is there anything else I should be considering?

Hey great call on that knife. I'm gunna wait for a few more suggestions before I pull the trigger. Anyone know where to get one (ZT0200) for lower then 129.99?

For a large-size folder, many would agree that the best bang-for-the-buck one right now is the Kershaw JYDII. Nice grey G10 scales, thick .070 liner lock, and very smooth flipper action (doesn't even need wrist flick). Can be had for $50 or less.

For another CRKT, the M1 Lightfoot has had very good reviews. It's one I've been looking into also. AUS-8 steel happens to be one of my favorite steels also. Also around $50.

I like the Buck SBMF 889, but mainly for it's looks. In the $50 range, the above are better folders IMO.

The Kershaw Blur is a nice folder also. 13C26 is crazy sharp and easy to sharpen. S30V will hold an edge better, but it takes longer to sharpen also. Either steel is good and you won't regret either one. Kershaw's got a lot of options in the $100 or under range, including the upcoming Lahar (VG10 and G10, nice!), upcoming NRGII, Boa (at the limit if your price range), and Spec Bump (just above your $100 limit) you should consider also.

There's still a few Buck Strider 880s around also that can be had for a bit over $100. These are tanks of a knife! Blade is 4.6mm thick alone!...and has thick (.065") titanium liners and grippy G10 scales.

FYI, the standard Blur is still being produced in 440A, not 13C26. We will be changing the Blur to 13C26 in 30-60 days.

Welcome CCN

So based on the knives you have listed, I am thinking you want about a 4" blade in a robust design.

If you can spring about $120, you could look at a Benchmade 710. I've seen it in D2 and 154CM.

Another candidate might be the Kershaw Avalanche at about $90. It has S30V steel.
(These are on-line prices)

NOTE: A finger choil allows you to choke up on the blade for more control. An alternative to a blade with a choil is buying a knife with a shorter blade.

I am more concerned with in the event of a liner lock failing, I prefer to simply pinch/crush my finger then sever it. That's why I am partial to having a choil.

They just give me a warm and fuzzy.

Thomas appreciate the warm welcome, and thank you for the update on your product line.

The 710 is not a liner lock. Is a linerlock a requirement?

Liner lock is not a requirement, I like the frame lock (I think that's what its called) of the ZT 0302. But, its not worth the extra 100 dollars to me (just can't justify it)!

Is there a way to safely remove the coating on the ZT 0200 series blades so that it looks like a satin, polished, or matte finish?

If you like the design of the Buck Strider but not the steel, try to find a Buck Strider Tarani 882 BKX Police Knife. It has a Paul Bos heat treated blade in ATS-34 SS.

I like mine for the reasons you mentioned, being able to grip the knife in front of the lock and it's uncoated.

They pop up on Ebay every now and then, some dealers might still have a few too.

lol, thanks guys you've been a tremendous help. I guess I am picking nits.

I think I'll go with the ZT, if I happen along a B/S Tarani with plain edge (fat chance!) I'll pick that up as well.

The help has been much appreciated.

Picked up a Kershaw Blur with assisted opening and sweet sharp blade at Wal-Mart for $50.00. It's a great EDC so if you're watching the bucks this will make you happy...
