Hello

I'm trying to find the micron level of the 1000 EP stock stone, some say 1 some say 7, the EP site sat about 13?

I lost my tapes (well someone threw them away grrrr)

I just bought .25 micron spay and strope, so i need to go from the EP 1000 to that in the most effective way possible.

I was thinking about 5K -8K - 16K shapton glass stones, but again i don't know the micron level of the EP 1000 stone.

was hoping you experance guys could point in the right direction as to not waste money and get the results i'm looking for. :D

edge pro website says 2,000 is 9 micron 3,000 is 3 micron but doesn't say what the 1,000 grit is I say go to edgeproinc.com click contact us and talk to ben dale the inventor of the edge pro, I talked to him yesterday really nice guy and super helpful. The website also compares the stock stones to aftermarket stones as well so that may be helpful to you as well.

i would love to see whats in that thread but the photo does NOT show up for me at all, it would be better if they hosted it else where.

AND

do you know how many times i have "stickies" that are "stuck" for way to long and not updated? That's why i asked in a tread because I don't trust stickies to have the most current info (and the fact that it dont show up for me)

I got the 8 piece chosera kit. I'll eventually get the finer shaptons, but they are quite expensive. My knife buying keeps getting in the way. lol. That and I am VERY happy with the chosera's. You can get away with the 5 piece just fine though.

Once you use the stones you'll never think about the tapes again.

so what stone do i need to step from 1000 EP to .25 strope?

I would say 3k 5k and 10k. Then maybe a balsa strop with .5 micron compound.

+1 here, the more steps between your start and destination, the less refining you'll have to do at each. Potentially, the less time you'll spend overall, since high grit stones don't do so well effacing the scratches of a stone far below in grit.

Between the Shapton Glass, Shapton Pro, and Chosera stones, you have to decide how much you want to spend. It's pretty much undisputed that all three are superior to the stock stones, they just behave a little differently on the steel. Chosera stones are more forgiving, more feedback, whereas the Shaptons expect a reasonable baseline skill and cut the steel aggressively with less "feel".

In terms of sharpening process, the Shaptons require less presoak than the Chosera stones, so that may be deciding factor given that you seem to want to stick with the Edge Pro stones you already have, and those are splash-and-go.

One quick thing I should mention, because the stones differ in thickness, if you don't have the drill stop collar already, you should probably look into that. Ben has said that the higher EP stones are slightly thinner so as to focus on the apex being sharpened, so really, even stock stone sets should be using a collar.

Thanks, i have the angle cube i check that it is within .03 on every stone change only takes a second

Anyone know where to buy one locally? The drill stop collar that is.

I tried Home Depot but they don't sell them.

I should probably try Harbor Freight. I was surprised the other day to not only find some nice Japanese wood saws, but also angle cubes, on sale even. :)
