Lost my Leatherman, looking into a Gerber.

Lost my black oxide Wave today, no idea what happened to it. It was in the case this morning when I put my belt on and about an hour later the flap was open and it was gone. I looked everywhere for it.

Very sad, I've had that multitool for at least 8 years, on my belt every single day. It was on my belt at the birth of every one of my children and has trimmed every one of their finger and toenails since. Been through alot with that tool, gotten me out of alot of jams.

Anyway (wiping tear from eye), I have another Wave here as a backup but it's silver (kinda attached to the black) and it's sooooooo tight. Not more than it's supposed to be I assume but I was so used to the completely broken in version I had. Thinking about trading it out.

I had a Gerber 600 before I got the wave and liked it well enough. Thinking of trying one out again for a change of pace.

So anyone have a Freehand and Diesel? They any good? Better than the regular 600?

Thanks.

My .02 cents... Buy another Leatherman, a SOG, or a Swiss Tool.

I broke 3 Companion (or was it a Suspension? hmmm?) tools at the lock for the main blade. Broke the file and the saw blade off a couple more. So did another guy I know. They weren't being abused either. I think since they moved so much stuff offshore, quality down right sucks. They have a lot of cool and innovative concepts, but I can't really bring myself to touch them anymore.

I carry a wave on my duty belt, the flap never stays closed. I'm surprised I haven't lost it yet. Now the stitching is starting to fall out of the sheath.

If black is your thing (which I also dig), consider in addition to a black Wave a black SOG or black Leatherman Supertool 300 (see ebay).

I'm still hoping your lost Wave turns up.

I too have broken a 2 gerber multi's. Mine may of been broken due to abuse but my leatherman wave has taken just as much abuse and is completely fine.

When it comes to Gerber, the Diesel is better than the 600 for the most part.
But seriously you can look into getting another black Wave or a black Vic Spirit. Or a SOG, but I think they are heavier and I don't know how noticeable that difference is

Whenever these threads come up I can't avoid defending Gerber. I have a 400 tha I have abused repeatedly for 11 years and it hasn't failed me yet. It looks like the beater it is but it keeps coming back. I think the older ones are better than the current models though. Everyone who says they are junk can't all be wrong but it is definitely a YMMV situation. My advice is simply get what you want. Your choice doesn't have to please anyone but you.

Well, that's disappointing. I had a Gerber 600 circa 2000 ish and it was a pretty good tool. I did break off the file but I was using it to pry so I took complete blame for that.

I know that Gerber ain't what it used to be but I was hoping that the USA made multis were still decent.

Might still try to trade into one and give it a shot to see how much they have declined.

Guess I'm hoping to find the SOG then instead.

i can't recommend the gerber tools. My two top tools are the leatherman charge tti and the swiss spirit tools. I carried a charge tti for years and it never let me down, now i've got a swisstool spirit(the one with the scissors and plain edge blade). I think the fit and finish on the swisstools are in another level from leatherman tools but you can't go wrong with another leatherman.

Shotty if you're looking at SOGs, I think that Chinamart has one of the Powerlock models quite cheap now

I had a diesel that I beat the hell out of and it help up very well, however I strongly prefer the wave. It is set up better, and the tools are more useful. I wouldn't say that the Gerber MTs are junk, but the Wave and Charge are simply thought out better IMO.

Hi,

If black oxide is your thing, have a look at the black oxide Leatherman Blast (see my thoughts on the Blast in another thread).

Best - Joe
