Lost my Meerkat - what is like it ??

Hi folks,

I have been MIA for a long time, but figured some of you folks could help me out or (Sal - if he even still comes in, LOL). I have been using/carrying my ugly little Spyderco Meerkat for well over a decade and lost it last week some how. I went back to retrace my steps and I can't find my beat up little Meerkat.

I looked on Ebay & online only to learn it hasn't been made in a while. I found some short production run, but am unwilling to pay $150 for one! I paid about $30-35 for it new. I like tip DOWN, PLAIN edge and the small little wire clip. Whenever I took it out at work or where ever people would just laugh at the knife and didn't feel threatened. :)

I tried looking at other Spyderco's, but most are tip UP, or the pocket clip is too big. At the moment I went back to my Spyderco Calyso JR with the rough fish scale like handle. Yeah, I have some nice custom folders squirreled away, but I am too practical. I pried staples, cut double walled cardboard and my Meerkat always had packing tape wedged in it some where! The edge on it was OK and I would touch it up with a ceramic stone or diamond stone now and then.

Open to suggestions my fellow Spyderco fans! If some one has an used PE Meerkat they want to part with please send me a pm. ;)

I'm not sure you're going to find anything new that carries tip down but if you want an affordable little folder that's pretty close, take a look at the Chicago.
With a little luck you can find one priced close to what you paid for the original Meercat.

I have a burgundy one from the run a few years ago. It is my work knife also for the reasons you stated. Working in a hospital limits one's cutting tool options. I'm really blown away with the ergos of discharge a small knife. The thickness kinda of makes up for the lack of length of the handle. I feel your loss, I'd probably opt for a dragonfly in ZDP if mine were lost. Good luck choosing a replacement. Let us know what you end up with.

Check your email.

The Chicago is the closest, I guess, but not the same I am afraid.

I just renewed my membership so hopefully, I can send/receive messages SOON!. ;) LOL, I don't recognize any of people in here now.:p

Hi Maddog,

Welcome back. Yeah, I'm still around, as are a few that you will remember as you visit.

The Meerkat is an odd model in that there is really nothing quite like it. Which blade shape did you have? We could probably plan a sprint in another color?

sal

Hi Sal !

My Meerkat was the PLAIN edge one (normal shaped one - no reverse stuff!) of course! :D Most folks could never figure out how to close the knife once it was open! It took me a while to figure it out, too. LOL, I came across one at one of the small knife shows many moons ago and purchased it because it was so NON-threatening !!!
No one where I work ever was startled by it when I took it out. (I pull the blade open with one other hand and didn't use the thumb hole)

I like the bright blue ones (some of the Delica's are that way). Makes it easier to find if you drop it. Whatever color it was available in, I would get one or two!

I ordered a black Dragonfly (plain edge of course) to hold me over until another batch of Meerkats get made up. :D Yeah, I could stop being cheap and break out one of the customs and start prying the big staples off of triple walled corrugated boxes. I always chamfer the thumb holes & stone down any sharp edges. Left untouched, the edges eventually wear a hole in my jeans in about 6 months! :grumpy: People think I buy designer jeans?! NO.

Wow, a week passes and it this goes to page 3 ?!#

DocT - I never got your message? I re-joined so can you send me that link again? Thanks, dude.

No go, DocT?! LOL, try sending me an e-mail? I tried to contact you but it says you have your private messages shut off? E-mail not work either? TIA

I loved my meerkat when I was working with our state emergency service. The ergos and control were excellent and the ability to close it one handed while wearing rigging gloves was invaluable. Mine is a standard leaf shape blade. A ffg version with something nicer than AUS6 would make me very happy.

2015 would be a great year to make some Meerkats, Sal. :-) Just kicking it back up. LOL

Dragonfly is functional, but not as robust as the Meerkat. IHMO.

If you buy the G10 Dragonfly, you will change your mind on the robustness.

Sorry you missed out on the Meerkat. I tried.

Fixed my post: modified drop point plain edge for me. I think the cricket back then was the only reverse S (>15 yrs ago of course).
